I was laying under the truck the other day while changing the ATF fluid. I happened to look up at the starter and noticed that the nut that is suppoed to hold down the wire on the primary connection to the starter was missing. It was just barely making contact and the round terminal was just wedged onto the post due to some tension on the wire. Looking closer, the stud looks like there has never been a nut on there at all... it was pristine.
I guess I've been driving my '04 F-250 for two and a half years like this. I'm amazed it started every time.
"Let's just leave this here nut off, Bubba, and see how long it takes for somebody to notice it."
"That there's a good idea, Joe Bob...but I can't see how it'd make it off the line..."
Two and half years later....
"Hey, Bubba, I just read on that Ford truck site our parts changers read now and then that that missing nut was noticed! The guy just happened to notice whilst he was under his truck!"
"Well, Joe Bob, that means we can leave 'em off from now on. No telling how long it'll go 'thout somebody seein' it. Save us more time to play a round of dominoes..."
Someone at Ford will see this post and realize that, not only can they save .0001 dollars by leaving off that nut, they can double that savings by shortening the battery cable to compensate for the missing nut.
