I currently have a 361W engine with no modifications in a 63 Flareside Custom Cab. The engine is obviously not stock. I am looking at beefing up HP. I can purchase a 351C block and heads at a good price. Should I go with the C and rebuild it, or should I rebuild the W engine? The W is currently a 2bl, and I could add cam, headers, intake and a 4bl. I am looking for any and all suggestions, including building for a different block entirely. I want a sound motor with high HP, and fuel economy (yuk) is not an issue. The original 3sp manual on the column has been swapped for an auto on the floor. Let me know if you have any suggestions. Thank You!

Do you mean 351w?

Do you mean not original?

I would suggest the W, it is a very reliable engine and a lot more current, with a ton more options/parts available.
If you plan an overhaul zero in on your budget and go from there. You could expect to spend at least $2000.00. If you have deep pockets $4000.00 can be reached fast.
I have a 70 351W in my '64.. got it from a guy who put a 351C in his 77.. he wants the W back.. nothing wrong with the C even in the two barrel form, but the W develops torque earlier therefore is a bit more streetable for a daily driver, if that is your preference...
Mine is currently being rebuilt at a trusted speedshop and is going to run me about $2000 for a better than stock rebuild.. we are shooting for about 300-325 hp.
