Does the High Freq automatic start sence when you are close to the metal and jump the amps up, or do you press down on the pedal or what? I know the old way was to strike a copper plate, but I've never used this machine and just wondering what to expect.

I do know you're not supposed to touch the tung tip to your work, so what's the trick to this.

H.F. is a high-frequency (about 3Mhz ususally) at around 3000 volts. It jumps the arc gap between the tungsten and the work, creating a path for the weld current to jump. It's kinda like a lot of spark plug discharges. It is used to start the arc on DC and to both start and maintain it on AC. (AC, being alternating current, the arc goes out 60 times a second). All you do is position your tungsten over the work, press your foot pedal and let the HF jump. The arc will start and your heat will increase as you press down on the pedal.
