my 02 does the same thing! but mine is only front wheel drive, no rear drivetrain to be the cause of the problem. rotate tires, still sounds like it comes from rear. replaced all wheel bearings. still the same problem. next is the $500 set of tires.
I had a pretty loud droning noise on my 2001 2X4, my wife even noticed how loud it was, I went with the Michelin LTX MS and the noise is gone, in my case it was the tires, what a hugh difference it made, it even made my wallet lighter too.
I had the same noise on my 06 xlt 4wd, mine only did it on extreme cold days for the first few minutes on the highway 50-60 mph ,then went away, doesn't happen when it's warm.
Had the same problem on my 05 4wd 4x4....... it was the tires.....replaced free by ford....Theres a TSB out for conti-conti tracs 225/70r/16 manuf (car ) after 8/04 code on tire is 104t...... will post later with the TSB #.
just to mess up the theories. my wifes 2006 escape XL 4cylinder 5 speed stick with general tires started with a leaking transfer case or whatever that viscus coupling that sends the power to the rear wheels. They couldnt get a seal so they replaced the entire "transfer case" 1000.00 bucks under warrenty. Cool. Next i noticed a wheel bearing noise when making left hand turns. Back to the dealer with 15000 miles on it. They changed both front and 1 rear wheel bearing now i have this random droning noise that sounds like the right front wheel bearing. Now i am taking back on thursday and i'm really loosing my sense of humor. after the 1st year of no problems now its going in for the 3rd time in 2 months. It doesne help that the service manager has the personality of a rock.

Wow, you've received some great service. I'm never able to get my vehicle back in at least two weeks....and you're able to get it serviced three times in one month. Your service department is fast! On second thought, maybe that's the problem?
Have the engine transmission angle checked. There is a service bulletin on this with the v10 with the 228 wheelbase.Could be same problem with other trucks as well.Worth checking out.
