Well got mine started for first time in awhile today. Truck was completely dissasembled -so new fluids oil the works. My question is about the coolant system. I admit to being a poor mechanic so bare with me. After running at an idle for about five minutes the motor was climbing into the high temp zone. I had the cap off the radiator to check the flow and add coolant if necessary. It never did seem to circulate or warm up the radiator fluid so I shut it off. My truck runs a coolant line back to the tranny cooler(automatic) and I have the heater core bypassed at the engine with a loop between the two heater openings. What would be the best way to bleed the system of air. I believe both the waterpump and thermostsat are good. And the radiator is a fresh rebuild so that shouldnt be blocked. However neither hose warmed up as the engine did-whats is your opinion of my next move?
thanks,Eric
Try pulling the thermostat housing off and filling the block directly. Also, check to verify the thermostat will open. I've had one new one that was stuck shut. Either a pan of water on the stove or a good push with your fingers will open the thermostat.
It is not unusual (after filling a completly empty cooling system)to warm up Ford engines beyond the normal temp in order to get the t-stat to open and allow air to vent and water to flow. If you want to pre-vent you mignt thread back the two forward bolts that attach the bypass tube to the water pump and just crack back the hose fitting. Disconnecting the heater hose at the intake manifold may also be a possibility. If the engine actually boils over and the radiator water is still cool, the T-stat would certainly be suspect. They can fail both open and closed. HTH
