I just got a 1964 f-100 4x4 step side
front axle wouldn't lock in so I thought must be lock outs (ha-Ha)
I put new ones on still no front. when it's locked in at transfer case and lock outs drive shaft spins freely. can anyone give me my next place to look?
Not exactly sure but it doesn't sound like the transfer case is locking in. Even if the lockouts were bad, the driveshaft should not be able to spin if you are in 4wd and parked. If there is adjustment in the shifter linkage to the transfer case, I would look at that. There are a lot of really great people here that will be able to help out more. You've come to the right place.
if the're both locked, the t case and hubs and the d shaft still spins, then you have a problem at both of them. Did you put the springs back in hubs? Then with the t case, check your linkages and make sure its going in all the way.
The linkage can be very loose and not shift into 4x4 (hi). What to do is remove the rug, boots, and cover from the floor. To remove the cover, you might have to remove the bench seat first. I cut my cover in 1/2 to make it quicker to remove.
Shift into 4x4 while leaning over and make sure it shifts in. Then manually try to force the linkage that goes into the case all the way back. It is a little 5/16 rod that does all the work moving in and out, even though the linkage itself is connected to a 4" x 5/8 bolt.
