i have a 2000 ranger xlt ect cab 3.0 litre auto tranny.
is it normal for thereto be side to side movement of the axle? looks to be about between 1/6" to1/8" total movement.if iraise the rear end off the ground i can grab the tire and push pull back and forth.thank you.
A little bit of end play in a conventional rear axle is normal, but it would seem to me that 1/8" is a little too much. Usually, you can feel it but you cant see it. Are you measuring it or just guessing? Another factor is how many miles are on your truck. If it has a lot of miles (100,000 plus) more end play would be normal. I could live with 1/16", especially if the truck has a lot of miles.
thanks for your reply dan.it has 52k,i think i need to check the amout of play to be accurate.i have no problems repairing anything under the hood but never worked any rear axles.
are you talking about the entire axle housing, or just the axle sliding in and out of the axle housing? makes a huge difference as to how much of an issue it actually is. If your talking the entire axle housing and all moving it's not uncommon to have some moverment as the springs are not 100% solid, if they were then it wouldn't have any up and down movement, but you have shackles that allow for it to flex and those allow a small amount of side to side movement also. This will get worse with time, almost more than with miles as they are mounted on rubber bushings and the rubber begins to deteriate which is why people replace them with Poly bushings which don't deteriate as bad and are actually firmer right from the start. If it bothers you then you can buy new poly bushings and replace the stock rubber ones, there will still be just the slightest amount of play but much, much less than the factory units. But be warned they factory bushings are not fun to get out of the spring eyelets, it will be a fight, it has been on every one I have ever done so just be prepared.
if i jack the truck up so rear wheels are off the ground i can grab either tire and move it in and out.like i said it seems to be between 1/16" and 1/8".when the truck is not jacked up i can rock the bed back and forth and hear the slop. thanks.
