I have a 2000 F150 SuperCab White.. Today I walked out ot my truck and noticed that something hit my cab.. Its in the back of the cab on the passenger side by the Rear Window.. About 3 inches down from the roof.. It looks like something hit it as there are black streaks running away from the area. I have a good chunk of paint missing, about the length of an index finger and a lil bit wider then your finger.. ITs all the way down to the bare metal.. What do I do? I dont want to pay a paint shop 100.00s to fix it. .Is there anything I can do with stuff from an auto store thats not complicated? Im not worried bout it looking perfectly brand new, I plan to repaint it in a year or so.. But the fact of metal rusting worries me.. I dont want to just put gray primer over it, rather at least try to keep it "white" somewhat..
I dont know what hit it and it really pisses me off.. Its a lot of paint to just be "missing".. Is it possible it just flaked off? I looked all over the back and none of my other paint looks loose or bubbled.. Last thing I recall is getting a detail done last week.. THey waxed the truck and buffed it out with a buffer.. Could that have damaged it?
burn-through with a buffing wheel typically only happens on edges. As for a fix, touch-up paint in a small bottle applied with a fine brush should do the trick. For added insurance, you could apply a bit of rust neutralizer first.
picture shows me it flaked off, and that touch up paint should still work. Of course any touch-up paint only looks good from 10 feet or more away. The paint code should be on the data tag. It should say something like W4, WT, WF, YZ, or ZR. Any local parts store should have it.
Could burn through of happen? Or what else? I dont understand why that happened.. The rest of my paint looks fine.. Could something have hit the truck and caused the paint to flake off like that.. Only thing I can think of is last monday the truck was waxed and buffed.. Could they have buffed too much right there? My truck is only 6 years old and I didnt think the paint was bad.. I had a 93 Dodge that had bad paint from the factory.. It flaked off the top across the whole span of the truck..
As for painting.. I was looking at the auto parts website and they have duplicolor spray touch up paint or the pen.. Considering the amount of space, pen isnt going to work.. They have paint and then the clearcoat.. Is this right? I have blue painters tape.. Tape off around the damage, spray it with the touch up paint, then the clear coat? How long between coats should I let it sit.. how many coats.. I'm no expert at painting but to save money I rather just do that for now.. I will get it repainted prob next year because I have tiny lil rock chips on my front bumper.. But that is hidious.. I can't live with that on the back..
Also I just checked the data plate on the door.. only thing I found was
EXT PNT : YZ
Im guessing is exterior paint ?

the rough edges surrounding the missing paint tells me the paint flaked off. Not from a buffer(buffer would show smooth edges where it burns), though maybe the wax had a reaction with it, but highly, highly, unlikely. You can confirm this by trying to stick your fingernail under the edge of the paint. If there's a "height" difference between the two surfaces, then it's paint flake. Anything that hit the area to remove the paint would have surely left a dent. As for the spray, or pen, I guess you could spray, but cover up everything around it. Or just get more than one pen. And yes, probably a clearcoat, too. Same masking applies.
YZ=white and is a base/clear other codes relating to this color are:4289, M6466A, M6887A
Im going to get the pen, didnt realize it had a brush on the other end.. Be a lot easier then using a spray can.. I'll send pictures when I've done it.. Dont know how well its going to look but at least it'll protect it for the time being..
no problem, just keep checking it from time to time, making sure it doesn't flake more. I'm currently working on an 89 body, and there's so much flake that I have to strip the truck down and start over...not my idea of fun. Good luck with your truck.
I can only imagine.. How well should that touch up paint last.. I just have to make it another year.. Then i'll have the truck repainted.. I just dont understand why it flaked.. What causes that?
Looks like a problem with the factory paint to me- delamination. It would really have to be one heck of a hit to take that much paint off, and shouldn't be that big, would be more like a chip where impact or dent. Not sure what the paint warrenty is. You could try taking to the dealership and complaining about it, but if out of the warrenty don't know what compensation you would get. Maybe if you squak about it enough you will they will work with you some. I'd take it to a dealer first and see what they say. You can get an epoxy primer in white and that will seal and protect the metal pretty well (although not likely match or be glossy and will chalk over time), but I would take it to a dealer first. Just touching up with lacquer touchup paint won't be as good as epoxy but better then leaving it bare.
looks like a problem with the paint that came on the truck, Is it original or was it painted before? Paint should not flake off like that from an impact. Check for factory paint recalls or customer complaints just to see if this is an underlying issue.
