Can a nearly plugged fuel filter on an injected truck cause a fuel pump to become weak over time?
I'm working on a truck for a buddy, and it's a pooch. After changing out a nearly plugged fuel filter, it still doesn't run any better. It's got a new cap and rotor, new wires and plugs, and a new O2 sensor. Thanks for any help.
I suppose it is possible that the pump has been pushing hard against all that build up and it has tired it out. However, have you tested fuel pressure? Have you checked the pressure regulator?
When I was having fuel pump issues I bought a remote electrical gauge from summitt and wired it up with a fuse and a toggle switch directly to the battery. I got a 1/16 MNPT to 1/8 FNPT fitting from either autozone or advance, summitt sells them also. You remove the schrader valve, screw in that adaptor and then screw the sending unit into the adaptor.
It allows me to check the pressure after the vehicle has been run for a while. My pump would be fine when first started but after a few hours of running it would lose pressure capacity. That problem was impossible to daignose with the standard pressure tool.
