Looking at buying a new 250 6.0l not sure which trans and gear combo to go with 4:10 with 6-speed or 3.73 with the torqshift 5-speed? I will be pulling a 4 place enclosed snowmobile trailer and a 34" travel trailer. Any input would be helpful. Thanks, Bill from MI
Your question would be user preference. Both transmissions are good, depends if you like shifting a manual everyday. Some report better fuel mileage with a standard transmission. My personal preference is automatic in a daily driver, manual in a heavy truck.
if your doing any HEAVY towing, i would get the automatic, as it is rated for more weight. also, i drive for ups so i feel im qualified to say, that if its your daily driver and u do even a decent amount of town driving, get the auto. save the stick for the mustang!

Torqshift all the way. Minus the snapring problem in 04 and a few greanded by extreme tunes, their bullet-proof. Especially for the towing you mentioned.
I put a lot of thought and test driving into my choice. If you are towing in the mountains, I like the stick way better. I can't stand a lot of shifting back and forth that the autos do. But, for any other driving, I would pick the auto by far over the stick. Oh, and also if I were a betting man, I would say the sticks are good for about 1 mpg in all conditions. And a stick is over 1000 dollars cheaper.
I tow an 11,000# toy hauler with mine, the tow/haul feature sure beats down shifting. It beats shifting in town traffic as well. With all the trans tunes now available that are not detrimental to the engine why would you need a manual? Also price a clutch job on one from Ford out of warranty, I think you will find that the manual is not cheaper if the truck is kept for 150,000 miles.
I have an 06 dually with a 6 speed and 4.10 gears. I had two duallys with torqshifts and 3.73s. I have a 3K slide in camper and a 3k boat that the truck pulls around 8 months of the year. I like the 6 speed/4.10 combination much better. This combination gets me better than 1 MPG better than the torqshift/3.73s. If I had it to do over again I think I would have put 4.30 gears in the 06. Empty on the highway I get between 17 and 18 MPG at 65-70 MPH. The truck only has about 7800 miles on it now. I am like one of the other posters, I could not stand all the shifting up and down the torqshift did. Hope this helps.
I have to say I love rowing manual trans. cars that have horsepower, and I have several Bowties so equipped (Muncie, T-56, Lenco), but for my trucks, I love the Torqshift. I have several friends with the 6-speeds, and if you are into driving hard, the manuals are too slow shifting, for me anyway. Go on some extended test drives and see which one you like more, then drop the coin.
Thanks to all, the info was much appreciated. I think I will go with the toque shift. Don’t do many mountain trips mostly Michigan and the surrounding states.
