3) The official intent of the EGR is to "reduce combustion temperatures to limit the formation of NOx (oxides of Nitrogen)".

Sounds to me like "We are gonna make things better by making your engine less effeicent".
But it's only mid-range loads. Just push the pedal a little further, get more air/fuel charge, get more power.
It's supposed to be off at WOT. Theoretically.
True, but just how much time does any street engine spend at WOT? I suppose my truck engine does way above average because I only use it with the big trailer behind and/or camper onboard and we have lots of hills and mountains around here. But I figure not more than 3 percent at WOT and that's partly because of my driving style. To how much time at light throotle settings where the damn thing is dumping exhaust into the engine? 50 percent to 70 percent would be my guess and like I said that's where you gas mileage should be and isn't. I never could figure out how making an engine less effiecent made emissions better, since if you lowered some, the wasted fuel had to produce more somewhere else.
I figure it's kinda neutral. All it does it drop the intake vacuum slightly, for any given throttle plate position. And only when it's open.
I don't know if it drops the "efficiency". It drops the peak temps, and it mixes the charge with almost neutral space. I'd guess it slows down the burn too... which means you can advance the timing more. Which means it'll ping when the EGR doesn't work.
Oh wait, I already said that...
Think of it as a way to increase the compression ratio slightly. Or not.
This is the EPA dude again, My system doesnt have the egr system and any other side systems because somebody cut everything off and when I fill the second tank to anywhere above half full it drains gas onto the grouund out of the tube that is still attached( I was told it use to go to a charcoal filter and perhaps from there to the carberator) I would appreciate the states that presently require emmissions(Green States.) If of course you have that list handy. Thaks to 76Supercab2 for that fine post.
If Oklahoma requires you to emission test to license your vehicle, then you gotta have the crap at least on the motor. Only your home state matters as the rest can't make you meet their standards.
