Hi I have some general questions for anybody to take a shot at. I have an original 1964 F-100 longbed. My Grandpa bought it new in Jan. 1964. It has 86,000 miles on the original 292. The tranny is a 4 speed. The rearend is very high geared. It is a posi-track. At 60 mph, it runs 3000 rpm. I don't want to turn it into a street rod, I want to keep it as original as possible. I do want to make it a little more driveable. Some of the questions I have are as follows. Does anybody know what would get the thing to 60 mph @ about 2000 rpm? Is there any after market header system to put dual pipes on this? The factory exhaust manifolds don't flip over or anything do they? Does any body have any good links for sites that focus on these specifically? It seems that there are not a lot of 64 Ford sites out there. The truck is used all the time, but I plan to keep it in good condition. I don't want to make it into a show truck. I had a uncle who once used it to try to pull stumps. Almost all the side metal is dented and needs replaced. I even have the original warranty card and manual that my G-pa got with the new vehicle. All changes I want to make will be so that they can be easily reversed and all parts will be kept for originality. I will try to get some pictures posted of it. Any information, help, and guidance anybody has will be appreciated. Thank-you.
Walt, I'll pich my nickle in. 3.00 is about as tall a gear that you can safetly go with, 2000 rpm is a strech. I don't have a good answer for the crossover, but just go to dual exhaust, built by a good local shop. Maybe find one that can put Flowmaster mufflers on. That would make a real Boss sounding truck.
Good Luck, and good Ford trucking to you,
John

In the still cool hours of the night, you can hear chevys rusting away.
Your truck probably has 3.70 or 4.11 rear gears. I have a short bed truck with the 3.70 gears, and at 60mph im turning about 2800 rpm with 275-60-r15 tires. Suprisingly enough, I have gotten as good as 17.4 miles per gallon with these gears. If you must have higher gears, any center section from a 9" rear axle with 28 spline axle shafts will work. As for headers, Sanders makes headers for your application. Cost is about $279 for coated headers. I havent tried them yet, but I may in the future. They advertise in Classic Truckin magazine. I have also heared good things about the Petronix electronic ignition conversion and deffinatly plan on this upgrade to mine this spring for about $75.00. I hope you enjoy your 64 F100 as much as I do mine.
Walt,
Welcome. The 64 is among the more difficult models to do anything with, but I am personally fond of them. One of mine was my grandfather's, too.
The best thing to do to get the rpms you are looking for is to change rear-end gears. Even then, 2k @ 60 might be a stretch. I can't give specifics now because my trucks are in several pieces, but one of mine had .300 gears and it still had plenty of get-up.
There are headers available. You might check with www.reds-headers.com You might find other useful stuff there, too. To answer your other exhaust question- I am almost sure that the manifolds do flip, and if so you could flip the right side, but you'll have to find a left manifold from a vehicle that didn't have the crossover, such as a T-Bird.
There are a number of resources available for miscellaneous parts.
since you have body damage, you might have a time finding front fenders, unless you go with fiberglass. There is a page on this site that might help as well https://www.ford-trucks.com/misc/suppliers.txt
There are not many sites focusing on the 61-64 fords, mostly personal sites where people display their personal vehicles.
You came to the right place to start your search. There's lots of folks here who can help you more, so don't be afraid to ask.
BTW- a 4 spd? haven't seen many of them in 64's- is it original?
