While under my truck today I noticed the inside of the driver's front wheel was coated with oil. I then noticed a large square shaped rubber "o" ring with a groove down the outside diameter sitting loosely on the axle. It looks as if it had popped out. I'm a newbie when it comes to 4x4's. Do I have a serious problem here? Is it simply a matter of forcing the seal back in? Any info would be appreciated.
Mine are loose also. I noticed them just wobbling there about a year ago. No leaks. I think someone before said it is just a "dust cover". Sorry I can't be of better help.
Orezona is right on the money. That O ring is just a dust seal. Mine did the same thing as yours and i had some oil leak through to the ground. There is another axle seal inside the differential that is supposed to seal the diff oil in. I believe
over time some oil leaks out. Check your differential oil level,it should come up to just below the fill hole. I replaced my seals when i replaced my ball joints.

Thanks Orezona and PSNut, that's a load of my mind. I'll try and press the seal back in for now. I'll also check my differential oil level and top it up if need be. Thanks again for your quick feed back. This forum is great!!
what timing, Mine is doing teh same thing and from what I have been told everybodies has those loose dust covers. but my inter one is leaking so I will have to replace that. will do both sides cause then I wont have to do the other side later. plus winter is coming and I don't want to burn any thing up and or have to work on my truck in the cold if I dont have to.

You are welcome. Just trying to live up to what FTE is all about.
I would say if you ever go off roading or drive through any mud or deep water, replace the seals. Not tough to do and there cheap enough NAPA # 21918 like $10 each. Oh and the seal thats hanging cant be pressed back in, I tryed that before I changed mine. Theres still the other half thats on the axle shaft, the seals just ripped in half basicly.

Yup....i tried that too once.
Here's a thread on replacing ball joints with info on dealing with all the axle seals: LINK
