i have been running 295/75/16 bfg all terrain on mine since i bought it and they have lasted about 60,000. need to upgrade, but those were D and worked fantastic. from what i know about the load the letter is not as important as the load index. fyi, with my 295s my front left tire rubs a little on sharp u-turns, its a 4x4.
I just put Uniroyal Liberator AT's 285/70r/16's on my Ex, they have a load range "D" but have a load weight rating of 3350#'s (the same or very close to the load range "E"). I tow a large travel trailer and recently had a rear tire blowout on the Ex while towing. Needless to say I'm down one pair of boxers. The tire that blew had a load range "D" but only had a load weight rating of 2950#'s. That's a big difference. The tire that blew only had about 15k on them and were in good shape and I always check tire pressures before we leave on any trip. By the way, the Uniroyals got good reviews on different sites and are available at any Wal-Mart at a great price.
my bfg 295s have performed great (thinking of upgrading to the 305/55/20 all terrain). plus, i am a big fan of a wheel well that has more tire than not. as far as mpgs, i get really good mileage per gallon (depending on how i drive), but i attribute that more to the banks six gun/exhaust than the tires.
We upgraded to BFG Long Trail tires in summer of 2004 from Sam's Club. The Firestone tires that were on it were showing the wear bars. I believe I went with teh load range D, but I'll check when my wife gets back from the mall. I think back in 2004 the last of the Explorer/Firestone tires were being recalled. I wanted a proven tire that would not give us the problems they were having with the Explorers. The Ex did ride much rougher! But I did have a hard time keeping 30+ psi in the Firestones (you ever try pumping these behemoths up with a 12V tire pump?).
I was just reading on another forum that there were some safety issues with the larger tires being mounted on the stock width rims.. Several of the manufacturers are suggesting that they be mounted on 8" or larger widths...

Hey Ltd... I have 275/70/18's on a 2wd... Looks good, people make comments.
265/75/16's too small? Have Pirrelli Scorpions. Speedometer reads about 4 mph too slow @ 75. Is this causing mileage to suffer also? Tires are fairly new, so hate to throw them away. Wonder if anyone takes trades so I can at least get something for them.
Running 285/16's. First a set of BFG ATs (d-load rating), great tire lasted for 50K miles.
Last month mounted the new Toyo MT's (e-load rating). So far I like them, ok on the road and light mud, but really haven't tested them in snow, slush, or ice.
