265/75/16's too small? Have Pirrelli Scorpions. Speedometer reads about 4 mph too slow @ 75. Is this causing mileage to suffer also? Tires are fairly new, so hate to throw them away. Wonder if anyone takes trades so I can at least get something for them.
I got the Pirrelli Scorpion's in that recall. They're junk in any amount of snow w/4WD.
I'm looking for new tires now even though the scorp's only have about 15,000 miles on them.
The bulk of the problems with the Firestone tires were from either "too busy to be bothered' (lazy) or uneducated in the checking of tire pressure owners. Not the tires themselves. Underinflation = heat and seperation. Alot of these people with rollovers pointed their fingers at the deepest pockets instead of admitting they hadn't been diligent in their tire maintenance proceedures. Rant over...lol. the 285's will work just fine.
at risk of stealing this thread... I loved the vette pics and story I found from your 'signature' link..... I sold my stock (and 90% original) '71 350/270 2 years ago and have been shedding a tear each week ever since.. at least your kids will inherit a great story (and maybe a great car) as your legacy.
I purchased BFG 285 tires and didn't get but 20K miles before I had to replace them. NTB / BFG gave me a huge credit because these tires should have never been mounted on an X (their words). I am amazed that so many of you are able to use the 285 or 295 size tires. I always use E rated tires because we tow heavy loads at least twice a month.
As most of us will recall (pun intended) the Firestone tire recall for the OEM tires was partially due to Ford putting 'D' rated on the truck and should have been E.. All tires offered as replacements by Ford under this recall were E rated. (I negotiated for Bridgestone Dueller A/T - REVO's)
In general terms I think most folks want a tire to match each axle's load carrying capacity.. can never be too safe.
I also have the Pirelli Scorpions on my new '01 X and they only have about 15,000 and are wearing out big time.. I had the pressure, alignment and balance done when I brought it home several weeks ago and they were all ok,but the dealer told me that if I got through the winter on them I'd be lucky.. He said that he couldn't really pin point a reason, but they were wearing in several different ways...
I posted this before about people using 285's or larger on stock rims and they are designed for the wider rims than the y are put on.. Several major dealers are requiring waiver of liability forms signed before they'll sell them to you...I will see if I can find the link from RV.net...

I am on my 3rd set on her 02 Ex, 1st set Goodyear MTR's,,,Killer performance in mud/snow/grass most everything, wore like IRON, got almost 45k out of them, they are a tad noisy on the pavement (they even pulled out my 99 loaded with wet oak stuck in the mud!) went with Nitto Terra Grapplers next, (these are all 315/75/16 E's btw) they only lasted about 28k, but they wear evenly and were EXCELLENT in ALL conditions, (minus the mud) very quiet at highway speeds, I tow a 27' Toyhauler, about 10k+ great tire. I now have Pro-comps All_Terrains on it, they have a 50k warranty, are very quiet, really good in rain and towing, haven't had snow or mud yet to see how they do in that, but I think its a comin, not expecting great performance in mud, due to they are not made as a Mud tire, but they look to be excellent in snow. Will let ya know

Yeah it is!
Where are you at, specifically? Oakhurst? Mariposa?
Back to the question tho, I have the Toyo Open Country AT 265/75/16's on the Ex and they seem to wear very well. Haven't taken them up to snow country yet, like we did when we had Michelins on the rig, but I'm thinking they'd do ok.
Is anyone running the Toyo Open Country AT's on their rig in the snow?
I am off of 420, right before you go down the hill into Oakhurst, my address is Coarsegold, right on the border of the two. Last year we had LOADS of it! Was really pleased with the Nittos, they are made by Toyo I was told, I would think the Toyo's would do great, almost got them, but 4wheel parts was having a sale on Nitto's, I mounted them, but walked out the door with them for about $630 I think.
Where are you at?
Central Coast...Monterey Peninsula...Seaside, to be exact.
We go to Yosemite every year and camp at Lower Pines for a week.
We usually take 140 in, through Mariposa and El Portal, but because of the slide closing 140 this year, we had to take the southern route in, through your place and Oakhurst.
We'll probably end up going that route from now on anyway because the wife wants to start taking the horses (hers and the kids') with us when we go camping, and she's not even going to attempt pulling a 4-horse bumper pull on 140 with that rock wall on the side that almost kisses the fog line. Heck, in some parts, the wall IS the fog line!
Curves are too tight, lanes are too small, rock wall eliminates margin for fading or pulling off...nah, she'd rather skip it.
We have 265R-16 BFG Long Trail's on our 2001 Limited. We've had them for @ 2 1/2 years, although we didn't drive it much last year after Katrina. With gas back down @ $2/gal. we drive it more. We still have plenty of tread left. We have free rotating and balancing from Sam's, but we've only used it once.
I think it is the same. If it is, I'm not telling my wife! She has a heavy foot. I am also of the opinion that 265's where what we had stock. I'll check the spare to make sure.
