Definitely the Toyo MT. You will not found a stronger casing. 7-ply tread and 3-ply sidewall. Load Range E. Ran 285/75-16's on my '04 F350 6.0 Crew 4X4, now have 33X12.50r-18's on my '05 6.0 Limited X. There isn't a better tire out there.
01 X v10 LPG converted: I'm planning on a mod that includes custom shocks, rear swaybar and slight lift ~2 inch f/r, amo. 295/75-16's are part of the qualified recipy - So far the only brand I have found for this dim. are the BFG's - until I stumbled over General Grabber AT2 the other day.
They should even be great for winter conditions -which is quite important here in Norway.
Anyone of you guys in the US have experience with the Grabbers?
I was told when I bought my BFGs that Goodyears of this size are hard to balance. One guy was making Sam's good on there money back guarentee and trading the Goodyears for the BFG Long Trails that I bought. He only had a 1/2 ton truck.
So, nobody with any experience about the General Grabber AT2s? Somebody of you across the pond must know them??
Just ordered a set in 295/75-16 - hard to find a dealer here in Norway - but finally. Will have them some time end of this week. We'll see...

Just mounted 315/75's on stock wheels on my 2000 limited.Only had to pull back the plastic inner fender a bit with some wire ties,but have a little rub on the leaf spring at full lock.BFG a/t KO's.Can I adjust the steering stops?It really is at the stop and does not rub very much,not at all during regular driving.
9wire, just wondering why you would want to run a tire spec'd for an 8.5 inch wheel on a 7 inch wide wheel. You'll never get a flat footprint since the tread contact patch will only be as wide as the wheel. That means you are wasting the outer edges of the tire. The edges will cup as a result since they do not make good contact with the road surface. Do yourself and your new tires a favor and put them on at least an 8 inch wide wheel. I don't understand why so many tire dealers don't disclose this to their customers when selling tires. Probably because the salesman was either uneducated or only cared about "getting the sale". Putting your bottom line before your customers best interests is always a recipe for failure in any business. Just my .02 worth.
I put 285/75 R 16s on my 2001 F150 4x4. They are made by Cooper and sold at Pep Boys under Futura brand. They make HT and AT. I went with the more agressive AT.
They are awesome so far and about 33 in. tall. The stock 8 in. mags took them with no problem and I got out of there for $544 including everything.
285's are actually 32.5" tall, you can round to 33" if you want. I would double check that stock wheel width, all OE Ford wheels were 7" wide as far as I know. Came standard with either 235 or 255/70R-16's. The other option was a 265/70R-17 and those wheels were also 7" wide.
Got hold of a set of 295/75R16 General Grabber AT2s yesterday. Fitted today, turned out easy to balance. Almost noiseless on road, despite aggressive thread. Tests passed very well on wet tarmac and slushy snow. Offroading and icy conditions yet to be tested. I'll get the chance in short time. The modification scheme is now completed with the right size rubber, boy what a difference from stock! Can't figure out why Ford didn't build em like this in the first place.

The local Allen tire near me will not put tires on that do not meet the manufacturers requirement for width etc.
HOWEVER
Every other tire store and the LOCAL FORD DEALER puts 315/75/16's on thousands and thousands of superduty Fords with stock rims...as has been and is being done Nation-wide for years.
seems to work.
I know I am in love with mine after going from 265's to 295's and finally getting the "real deal" tires after two years and 40K miles.
If you just hamster-pound the pavement or drive the kids to soccer games then you don't need bigger tires.
If you tow gigantic things you probably don't want bigger tires.
If you don't have a diesel...well,....sorry.

Just because most tire dealers will do it as well as the Ford dealer doesn't necessarily make it right. Ford engineers would never spec a tire that wide on a 7-inch wheel nor would the tire manufacturer recommend it. I've been in the tire business for over 15 years and have seen a lot of people throw shocks, front end parts, alignments, and a lot of cash at their trucks to stop irregular wear when in many cases it was just too wide a tire for the wheel. When finally explained the root of the problem many wonder why they weren't told in the first place. I'm not here to reprimand anyone, just here to educate. If a customer absolutely want 315's on a stock width wheel we will give them what they want, but after they have been educated on rim width matching and footprint. A lot of people are under the impression that if the size ends in 16, the tire will go on any 16" wheel and that's just not necessarily true. I'm not saying you CAN'T do it, I'm just saying I don't recommend it. BTW, I run 33X12.50R18 Toyo MT's on 18X9.5 wheels on an '05 6.0 X with nothing more than a front add-a-leaf and air bags in the rear. They do rub the plastic at full lock but I can live with that. Sorry about the length of this post, I'm just very passionate about what I do. Just think about how much "beefier" those tires would look on wider wheels though....
