Complete Rebuild vs Long Block

Would you guys recommend doing a complete rebuild on a motor or just purchase a rebuilt Long block and slap that in?

I have a 93 F150 and I am mulling around some ideas on what to do with the motor. I have 130k miles on it and would like to have some work done to it.

Keep in mind, I don't have the ability to do the work myself so I will have to pay to have the work done.

What are your thoughts??

you can have a local shop do a full rebuild but it will cost you 2500.00-3200.00 to have it rebuilt. Most of the time a complete longblock from a trusted company is the key. i use S&S when i need an engine. www.rebuilt-auto-engines.com

I had my entire engine rebuild estimate done by a very reputable local shop and they quoted me at $1600 for a complete rebuild.

Why do you think you need a new engine? 130k is only about half the life expectancy of your engine.

Ordinarily, I would say order a long block from Jasper and enjoy the 3/36 warranty it comes with, but with your location it might cost as much to ship it there as it costs for the engine.

Another thing to think about is what you want. If you want to add a little pep during the rebuild you probably need to have a reputable local shop do it. If you just want stock there are a lot more options.

I wouldn't do the longblock or shortblock. About 5 years ago my friend and i both rebuilt the engines in our jeeps. My 80' cherokee and his 88' yj both with 258/6's. Mine still works perfect and he has had to yank the POS motor out 3 times since then to put in a new one.. The warrenty is good but you still have to do all the work, pull it out ship it out and deal with those queers about getting a new one.

And pretty much if you can surf the Internet you have a handle on an engine rebuild with all the books, web sites, and manuals they have for everything.

130k is baby miles for a 4.9. My 93 had 190k on it and didn't smoke, tick, knock, or do anything except run like a new engine. I know the guy that bought the truck and it's still running. I'm sure he treats it like **** too. Wait til around 350k. It might need one then.

Like the guy said, 130k is nothing for this 300 motor. If I were in your snow shoes, I would rebuild your young buck 300 motor at yoyr local shop. The shop is right there to make it good if you have any problems. If you get a shipped in long block, no telling how many miles is on that anchor or who built it. A good local shop will have no trouble rebuilding this common 6 banger.

leave it

130,000 miles is nothing for the inline 6 300 I wish that my truck would have had that low of milage on it when I got It. It currently has 170,000 miles on it and it runs super smooth no odd noises, does'nt burn oil at all. like everyone else said leave it. IF IT AINT BROKEN DON'T FIX IT
