I am in the process of making a 331 out of a 302. My current transmission is an AOD. Its an 85 F150. I am going to make this my racing truck. What is a good manual transmission to use that will support some HP? Will a M50D work? I know where a few of these are. Also, can i use a M50D From a 300 I6 on a 5.0 without any modification?
the lentech valvebodys work really well.the only other thing i do is i use the 4r70w wide ratio gear set and i also use the wider reverse drum so you can use the 2 in 0d band.also set end play to .010 to .020 . with a good overhaul and a premiume shift kit it should be able to hand the 331 you built.just dont use od
just dont use od[/QUOTE]
umm...so he may as well put a c4 in then?od is ok just don't do any full throttle shifts into od.the lentech vb has an electric overdrive like an aod-e so it's od off at the strip or in town but can turn od on for highway driving.
your right bronco.even though you can us od , but the band will burn with anything over 450 hp.i know the c-4 is a strong unit, but i like the od for street cruising.i feel the aod with a wide gear set has a better gear ratio than the c-4.everyone has there own oppinion, its just my 2 cents
hmm, that may be worth some research. Can someone explain the stall speed of a torq converter for me? Would i need an upgrade. This truck i want to be nice to drive on the street, but able to fend for itself at the strip.
The M5OD probably won't be enough for your engine, but the ZF5 is good for over 400 lb/ft torque, and of 3 bolt patterns, one should fit your 302. If you do go with AT, you got many choices -- I'd probably pick the E4OD, though you also need a control unit for that.
A good conveter and (as mentioned above) a good valve body will help your AOD live longer. I would suggest keeping your transmission an automatic type for drag racing. Autos don't miss a shift (unless they're broken) and they will provide consitant 60' times, trap speeds and ET's.
Stock for stock, the E4OD will be more durable and handle more torque. But I think the cross member needs to be relocated and different (correct length) driveshaft. Also, and E4OD will need a trans controller to run it.
I'd do the valve body and converter and drive it till it blows. Then go with a built C6 if overdrive isn't a neccesity.

the stall is needed to get the engine into it's power band .whatever the cam rpm range is you want at least this much stall.example-a cam with a rpm range of 2200-6500 you would want around a 2500 stall,at least.a loose converter makes more heat so a good tranny cooler is a must and a tranny temp gauge is a VERY good idea.
Okay, right now i have everything running through the radiator, then i have the tranny lines going through that then through an aux. tranny cooler. I plan on re-doing all of this with the new engine though.
