tranny ?

got a 2000 f-350 i think withthe 4r100 auto transmission with sonnox and tricumbler spring kit
i was pulling my 36 ft 5th wheel for the first time 18,000 lbs dry weight
pulled it 180 miles one way with no problems my tranny temp stayed at 150 degrees f and the outside temp was 75 f
But while i was backing it into the campsight it overheated about 280 is what guage read and transmission fluid was puoring out the bottom of the flywheelcover
i shut the truck off unhooked 5th wheel started truck back up and it quit leaking trans temp was still at 240 and on the way back home the same thing ran fine all the way home until i started to backer up in the yard
tranny temp went up fluid sterted pouring out in the same place tuned off truck wated 15 min and quit leaking
so what the hell is thier a relif vavle or somthing to relive pressure or what
or is thier somthing going on like a cracked torqe converter
can any one help !
going back up this weekend and makes me a little nervis

Sounds like the reverse clutches are slipping badly. That overheats the transmission and pours fluid out the front seal. Most likely the reverse clutches are burnt up.

What Sonnax kit? And I have never heard of a "tricumbler spring kit".

My father has a 2002 F350 Turbo Powerstroke with an automatic tranny (not any idea what one though.) I have herd that trannys tind to bubble out the front when they overheat, though I have ever seen it happen on his truck. He also has a 36' 19,000lb 5th wheel that he pulls alot, and one time I had the experiance to drive it, with the trailer. I dont know why Ford would do something so silly, but its reverse gear isnt geared as low as first gear forward. So when backing up with a 19,000lb trailer can be quite a trick, expecialy when parking in his drive, as it is 200' all up hill. He has an auxillery cooling fan on an external tranny cooler, and he had the computer reprogramed for more power. when they did that they also changed the cooler threshhold, so when the motor is under heavy load (Like going up a steep hill or backing up under load) the auxillery fan kicks in to high gear. I dont know if this is an answer for you or not but it maybe something you could look into. Hope this helps
Brad

OK, that's just the Sonnax regulator valve kit. I know exactly what kit that is.

You may have just overheated it riding the brakes. Don't do that again ;-)

Superduties are only designed to tow 13,300 lbs. You are overworking the trans.

First suggestion, if you have 4wd put the truck in low range to back up. Second suggestion is to check and see if your radiator is used as the primary cooler and then the aux cooler. On some of the Ford trucks they only used an aux. cooler. If that is the case you will definitely want to add an elec. fan. If you only have the aux. cooler, that is most likely the reason it overheated. It was not getting any airflow.
