I have a 06 ranger sport with the 3.0. I only have about 4500mi on it and when i make a turn from a dead stop, or hit a bump my steering wheel feels like its moving in and out. However when i grab the wheel and try to push it in and pull it out it doesn't move. I'm not sure if is me or has anyone else had ad this problem with their truck. I had a 2000 before this truck and i never felt that.
Seeing as how this puppy is still under the expensive factory warranty, we all get to pay for, on a new ride, I'd do as Matt suggested & make it Fords problem.
This condition isn't normal & should be looked at right away.
I'd go so far as gettng the service manager involved & take him for a ride, to let him see & feel the condition. If the service manager isn't available, at least get their steering specialist to go for a ride, while you recreate the condition.
If they resist the ride, be politely insitant & go up the chain of command until you get results.
I had a similar problem on my '01 B4000. One day as I was driving down the interstate I drove over one of the expansion joints in the highway and the steering wheel was shaking violently until i slowed down to below 45 mph and it would stop. The entire power steering rack had to be replaced. Luckily it was still under warranty.
Yep, you paid a lot of money for that truck, and that price included a warranty. Use it.
Steering issues are safety issues. Minor slop means something is loose, worn, or broken, and it's not going to get better. Raise a fuss if necessary (politely, or course).
That will cause a nasty vibration.. any time you turn the wheels with the engine off, it'll suck air in and it's a PITA sometimes to get it all bled out.
Got my truck back from the dealer the other day. After two days of "working on it" they decided that it was the steering shaft. They put a new shaft in and all seems to be well. Hopefully it will not come back.
