61' Power Steering

I have considered putting power steering in my 61' F-350. A place out in California, So Cal Pickups, sells a bolt in unit: http://www.socalpickups.com/store/DEFAULT.ASP

Has anyone used this?

This sounds like an easier instalations than some of the other posts I've read here where you have to change gear boxes etc... But I'm just starting to learn about mechanics, so I really don't know.

What do you guys think?

61' Power Steering

lt, the articles posted here are for 65 - 79 twin I-beams and are all bolt up/on. There isn't as much information here for the pre I-beam trucks.

I hope that you can find something that works.

John, did you take a look at the system I mentioned? I'd like to get your (and any one elese's) opinion on it. Below is a description of the item from the web site:

A8 03633
Our Price: $630.00
Quantity:

Power Steering Kit 57-64
This same system was used by Ford on cars and trucks for decades. The system isolates the steering box from the normal stess related to the working parts of your front end. The is accomplished by a control valve and hydraulic ram. The power ram applies pressure in the direction determined by the control valve. The steering box is now telling the wheels what to do instead of the other way around. The power assist unit will bolt right up. The kit comes assembled with: a drag link with control valve, a reinforced tie rod, plus two tie rod ends, power ram with hoses connecting it to the control valve, and all the mounting brackets necessary. You can retain and use your original steering column and steering box, along with your original pitman arm. The steering shaft assembly does not have to be modified in any way. The power steering pump, brackets, and pulleys are not included. However, many off-the-shelf power steering pumps can be used with this kit. Just check with us.

lt, just a little pricey. I suppose it will work.
I know the feeling of wanting to rid yourself of the strong arm powers steering.

Yeah,
The SoCal kit seems too high when you consider the alternative......
What's wrong with finding an original power steering box? All you have to do is swap boxes and find a bracket and pump...... I'm assuming you have a 292 V8, or maybe the straight 6, but either way you should be able to get by for about half the price or even less. This ain't rocket science, it's about as easy as it gets...... just my 2 cents.....

Thanks for the input. Like I said, I'm just learning, so for now, this stuff is rocket science to me.

Since I am dealing with a 61' and I've read FORD did not offer power steering until 66', what years on the steering box would swap in? And would it matter that it is not an F100, it is an F-350?

I have a 223ci six.

Thanks again for the input.

LT,

well, now you got me thinking whether or not power steering was offered on the 61-64 non-I-beam trucks....... I know I saw one in a junk yard that had power steering but I can't say for sure that it was a stock item...... Anyone know for sure if you could get factory PS on one of these trucks?

Maybe we should start a new thread on this subject......
