hey 2xford,
I'm not sure aobut your rig, as far as numbers go stock, but I am positive you will get a noticable difference in mileage and power if you straightpipe your exhaust. I have seen inside ford mufflers and its as though the 2.5 " goes to 1.5 " for the muffling of the sound.

If it's just a cut and weld/clamp I would say it's the easiest horsepower you can get.

Anything we do to the intake and exhaust will REALLY wake these engines up. Remember, this engine will gobble up any air you can give it. it could handle a2 foot scoop on the hood and open headers. it doesnt need backpressure.

get creative, and get power. browse a few of the threads about intakes and exhaust withing the last three pages and you will find some inspiring ideas.

good luck and WELCOME TO THE FORUM!

Jeremy

So you're saying that the stock headers are obviously crap and should be replaced with aftermarket ones? What exactly do you mean by a straight pipe? I'm guessing its just a straight pipe that goes from the headers all the way to the back of the truck, right?

When I say straight pipe, I mean no muffler.
But no muffler on a NA engine is going to be loud.

yes it is very loud it sounds like a hoped up 460 with no cat or muffler. I have 4inch stait pipe on my truck it works very well and alot of power increase.

So do you guys actually recommend the straight pipe versus the the typical muffler/cat application?

Aren't these trucks loud enough?? When I installed my a/c and power windows and door locks, I gutted the entire interrior except the head liner [carpet & head liner were new with new insulation], added insulation to the firewall, floor, door pannels, back pannel etc....just to reduce the exterior noise! I have dual 3inch exhaust with free flow mufflers piped over the axle and out the back...sounds like a harley when I stomp on it around 2300 rpm especialy when I have the propane on! With the windows up it's barely noticable but the engine noise is still quite loud, one day I'll rip out the interrior again and reinsulate the firewall and transmission tunnel.

Some people like em quiet, some people like em loud. I like mine loud, so I was thinking about doing the whole straight pipe thing, and even then I'd get a little bit of gains in hp and mpg. Then again, what the hell is the point of even having an exhaust if you think about it? Why not have nothing coming off of the headers? I always thought about that idea and wondered if it would actually work? What do you guys think?

Since diesels don't need any backpressure open headers would work fine.

Until you got a ticket for running an unmuffled exhaust....
And as long as you don't have to take it through emissions testing to renew your tabs....
And as long as you don't mind it drowning out your stereo....
And as long as you don't mind going deaf....
And as long as you don't mind breathing the diesel exhaust that will come up through every crack in the floorboards into the cab....

On second thought, maybe there are some things about it that wouldn't work so fine

hah, we don't get tickets for loud exhausts up here. The cops chase the crack dealers around here more than anything. my stereo isn't functioning, I already am slightly deaf....I don't think I'll be having the emissions tested, as we don't need to and I don't think I'd be too comfortable smelling exhaust. Maybe not a great idea....

its probably not a good idea to run without a muffler because it's really loud and you'l annoy people more than anything, depending on where you live and what the police's priority's are, I'd say you should investigate.

Agemenon, a glasspack is a muffler insulated with glass.

I'm not sure if its illegal in all states but you will get a ticket for no muffler. Probably get a second ticket for disturbing the peace
