Will Pep Boys or similar places take the large amounts of dirty oil that we have after a change? I know they will take 4 or 5 quarts but 16? Also what kind of oil drain pan are you guys using to catch that much dirty oil?
I don't know about Pep Boys, but in my area (Southeast PA) AutoZone will accept x quarts per month. I'm not real sure of the maximum at one time. The last time I went in, they asked me how many and I told them "10 quarts" even though it was 15 . Then, I dumped the oil myself.
I would say just call your local Pep Boys and ask?
Additionally, I purchased a large oil Draining/Storage container from WalMart. It is rectangular shaped and holds 4 or 5 Gallons. Stands upright like a 5-Gallon Gas Can for the back of Jeeps.

The last time I went to Kragens to dump oil I took in about 12 GALLONS. They start to look at you funny after a while and check to see if it is really just oil.
I use a large pan that holds all the oil, but I also use a Fumoto Valve to just drain it right into the 1 Gallon jugs. I get most of the oil into the jugs, and just use the pan for the oil coming out of the filter since I pierce it with an awl to lighten it up.
Another trick: My friend's dad passed away about a year ago and so my friend gave me the diesel specific stuff he had. One of the items was a big plastic "Black Velvet" whiskey bottle with the bottom cut off. The threads on the bottle aren't exactly the same as the threads on the oil fill tube, but close enough to hold the bottle as a giant funnel while you pour in the oil.
Most places I have found are OK with 4 gallons of oil. I use a 5 gallon bucket, just slide it under the truck, gives me about 4 inches above it to remove the drain plug. Plus the lids seal well, so the bed doesnt get covered on the way to dump it.
It too bad that I don't live where the other owner of my truck lived. Was looking in the black Ford book in the glove compartment and there is a card from the dealership which gets him $49 oil changes. :O What a deal.... Changing oil sounds like a big pain in the ****. I might see how much I can get it done for around here but if it is too much then I guess I will learn to love it.
Tell me how you get a 5 gallon bucket under your truck? Your truck must be lifted. I can't see getting a 5 gallon bucket under my 2 wheel drive F-250....
If you have a parts store that you normally use to buy parts from they already know you have a diesel and how oil it takes, they don't care, it is part of the great customer service they providing (HA). And they know it will help bring your business back.
I have some old Rubbermaid gas cans that I can get repair kits for and use them to pour from the catch pan into them. Only problem is that when I think about changing the oil....everything is full where I keep forgetting to take to Autozone and then they only want 5 gallons at a time.....have to visit several different stores....
That is a problem with 4 vehicles and 2 that get oil changes monthly due to long commutes
Autozone, Pep Boy? Just dig a hole out in the back 40...isn't that what everyone does ? Really, where I grew up in NH that is what everybody did...I mean everybody. I bet you can still find it oozing out of the ground at the homeplace...figure my grandad and father did that for over 80 years combined!
Autozone just "eyeballs" me after the second 5-gallon GI-can of oil...but they have never said a word.
the garbage collectors by me take all used oil and recycle it for you. they only take it the last week of the month so maybe if you ask they will take it for you

Actually it's not too bad, just alot more oil to deal with, not to mention a heavier filter to handle, but after a while you learn a few tricks to make things easier. Like putting a screwdriver up through the bottom of the filter to drain the oil before removing it. Actually I would rather change the oil in my truck than my wife's explorer. I'm a pretty big fella and I can easily slide under my truck without jacking it up, but not my wife's. I know people who take their trucks to garages to change their oil, but I think I'll just pocket my $50 - $100. Can save that for some mod's. lol. I guess it's jsut a personal preferance thing.
Where is a Quick "How to" on changing oil on one of these. I'm at my second oil change and would prefer to pocket the $100. I've never changed a diesel.
Its easy enough to change the oil in the diesel, no different than any other engine. But remember to put about a quart and a half of oil in the filter before you put it up.
I forgot one time and it scared the heck out of me when I started it up. Made some
noise I didnt like before the pressure built up.
