Like the people above you have mentioned you need a drain pan that holds 14 litres, a filter wrench that will fit 4.25" diameter filter, a hammer, punch or awl, 14litres (quarts) of fresh oil and a filter. First you may have to jack your truck up, loosen drain plug, slide pan under drain plug and remove the plug. When oil stops dripping take your hammer and punch and punch a hole in the bottom of the filter, slide drain pan under filter pull out punch and drain filter. When oil has stopped dripping take your filter wrench or strap wrench and remove old filter. Oil the gasket on the new filter, wipe the filter base on the motor with a clean rag and spin on new filter as tight as you can with your hands, put drain plug back in and tighten and then fill with 14 litres of fresh oil, wipe your hands, start truck and check underneath for oil leaks and if no leaks you are done.
Actually, no different than changing oil on a gasser.
Get a big container to hold the dirty oil (4 Gallons), place under oil pan, remove drain plug and wait (forever it seems) for all of the oil to drain out. Put drain plug back in. Move container to be under oil filter. Some now suggest to puncture bottom of filter to let oil drain out which reduces filter weight. Then, loosen oil filter and remove. Obtain new filter and prelube the rubber seal with new oil. Spin filter on per instructions. I believe it is turn until seated, then one full turn.
Many people have purchased and installed a Fumoto drain valve which is used in place of the drain plug. It permits easier oil changes.
Then, it's time to fill back up with oil (15 Qts).
It's an easy job. The only downside is perhaps oilly hands and having to deal with getting rid of the old oil.
Will Pep Boys or similar places take the large amounts of dirty oil that we have after a change? I know they will take 4 or 5 quarts but 16? Also what kind of oil drain pan are you guys using to catch that much dirty oil?
Steve
Do you have a county recycling area....?.....Some counties have more than 1, and most have an area with 55-gallon drums in which you can dump your old oil and leave the old filter.......Free of charge......And they'll never ask you how much you're dumping....They recycle and reuse the stuff (lubricants, etc.) in their fleet vehicles......
Well I did my oil change about a week ago. Put on the Fumoto valve and it is going to be great the next oil change I do. I didn't put any oil in the filter and the truck groaned a little when i started it and yes, it did scare me but read some of the above post and see what they say about adding oil to the filter. Seems to be some discussion about this.
Man, I'm going to start sounding like a salesman for Wal-Mart. But that is where I take mine. 2 5gal GI cans at a time. Back the truck right up to the door and TLE dude dumps it for me. I buy my oil there and they gotta take the old by law here. Our stupid county landfill only takes 5 gals at a time and it isn't worth the trip.
For those just getting into a diesel I will make a good suggestion if you have the room and ability.
Buy your oil in a 55 Gallon Barrel for great savings and easy changes.
If you are reliable about changing oil then you will use it in around 50,000 miles and save some big bucks buying in bulk and have a great burn barrel after it is used up.
You might even see if deals can be found to buy filters by the dozen!
Oil and filters is still way cheaper then replacing Diesel engines and you will be suprised to calculate the savings with this.
I take all my used oil to the local recycling center. They don't care how much I bring at a time. Last time I brought in 39 gallons. They just dump it into a huge storage barrel and burn it in a waste oil furnace to heat their shop. I only bring the oil in in the fall/winter.
I guess call me lazy,or whatever, but I have the local garage do it for me. I figured out the price of me doing it and them doing it, and it was about a $5-10 difference. Not enough for difference for me to do it. If it becomes more then that, then I will do it myself. The city has a oil recycling drum, and they don't care how much you dump.

Since buying this truck I found myself wanting to make sure that what goes inside it. Also I'm not sure that it is only a $5 or $10 difference.
Oil, Shell Rotella from Sam's 6 gallons for about $50 with tax. About $2 a quart. 15 quarts, $30
Filter. K&N $15. Could buy one a whole bunch cheaper but really like the nut on the end of the filter.
Total $45
Time with my new Fumoto valve, about 10 minutes and most of that is waiting for the oil to drain.
If I could find someone to do a Rotella change for $50 to $55 then I would be all over it but untill then....
Jiffy Lube. Take in a coupon, read the paper, no chasing around buring time & gas dumping the old oil off, all other fluids are topped off, cab vacumed, drive away in 20 minutes for $25-30 depenig on coupon. These things are so infrequent it's not worth the hassle anymore to do it in the driveway. Just my $0.02 worth.
