Smile Power disc conversion

Hello, this is my first post. I have a 66 f100, I have been reading about the power disc conversion and I am about to attempt it. I read in the tech article that the 66 is a little different and that I had to find parts out of a 74. the question is: What is different and Why only a 74? This year really narrows a junk yard search.

Selection can be from truck up to 1979. Here is a web site may find helpful. http://www.mongrelmotorsports.homest...f100discs.html . I used 1/2" square aluminum stock, obtained from any hardware store, as spacers between booster and firewall. Cut the stock approx. 2 1/2" long and drilled the 2 holes in each for the bolts, alum. makes drilling easier. Believe may need longer bolts, but don't recall. Suggest not bothering with donor master cylinder, for what local salvage yard will charge used, can purchase new for about same. I paid $44 new at local Napa Auto store. Make sure to take the differential valve. Have seen threads where member's suggest taking donor brake pedal assembly, I used the 65 assembly with the 1/2" square stock alum. as spacer. Used same brake pressure switch, modified an adapter at the differential valve. Again, can take the donor stop switch and install the electric. Suggest checking the bushings, etc. and replace if nec. before assembling. Just suggestion, but during salvage shopping may want to consider picking up 2-3 sheeve (goove) damper, pulleys, and brackets for your particular engine in the event to deside to go with power steering upgrade in the future. I would not take the pump, or steering box, can pick them up any time, and if never get around to upgrade, not a problem selling the pulley, damper, and brackets. Anyhow, just suggestion.

Let me be the first to WELCOME you to FTE! This is the Nation's truck stop, and you will find it to be an invaluable source of information.

You can use the disc brake system from any 2WD F-100 or F-150 from '73 - '78. I recommend personally that you get it form a '76 - '78 if possible, as the power brake booster sits on a lever knuckle. This knuckle or lever is flat insted of being a round bar, which makes it much easier to reloacte the hole for your brake pedal.
By the way, I am assuming you have a 2WD.
If you can find a donor truck, that is the best way to go, because you get ALL the little parts and doodads that end up costing you time and frustration. Further, you can sell the rest of the truck, and make a lot of your money back.

There are two basic methods to do this upgrade:
1. Replace the spindles, king pins and steering linkages.
2. Replace the entire front suspension and linkage as a complete swap.

There is a lot of great information here; be sure to read more postings to learn what others have done.

By the way, be sure to note your location, as there is a great possiblity someone is near you for fun and fellowship over these Slicks.

Good luck, and again, WELCOME!

Sorry, Welcome !!!

In addition, if it were not for the member's of FTE could not have accomplished upgrades made on my 65. I have probably bookmarked 90 percent of banjo's threads for references. There are a number of members who are extremely knowledgeable and can not suggest highly enough to bookmark those threads you may find useful in the future. Also, browse the 'tech/article' section, as well as the other forum's. Again, welcome.

I'm in Douglas, Georgia. thanks for the info. I was just concerned about why the article said only use a 74 model for a 65 to 66.

Matt, The info is old and I had hoped to get it updated this summer for the site, but it has yet to happen.
