Post 66 250 front disc conversion

Hey guys,

I read Kenneth Payne's tech article about this conversion. It says to remove the spindle assemblies from a 74 so the king pin diameter will match. Perfectly understood.

My questions are (1), are the I-Beam axles and radius arms compatable from 66-79. Reason for question, if the axles and radius arms are compatable they would be a lot easier to remove from a junk yard truck without having to pound out frozen king pins with limited use of tools and space. I could spend a little extra for the conveinience and give myself more of a year selection for the disc brake assemblies.(2) Of all the years of king pin style disc brakes, which are said to be the best. Stopping power, maintenance friendly, and availability of quality replacement parts. Keep in mind this is a 3/4 ton truck with eight lug pattern.(3) If the axles are compatable, would newer ball joint style axles be as well. Also would it be wise to convert from king pin to ball joint.

Thanks Guys! Happy Motoring and Lets Keep Those Fords On The Road.

Kevin, The I-beams are bolt up exchange from 65 to 79. It is my belief that exchanging the I-beams is easier than changing the spindals. You can do the rocking test to find a tight front end. I recommend buying your donor truck and keeping it until you have everything converted over. You can sell parts that you don't use and make your parts cheeper. IMHO
