I would wonder if it was the mufflers or something like that, my dad's original muffler is long gone. My 86 has a flange where the front and rear pipes met, and a really long muffler (when it was still factory type setup) This may be what was different.
Fellro86, I was trying to make a long story short thus I left out the reason I switching exhaust...I own a 86 F250 6.9 4speed 4x4 extended cab, body in rough shape but I took care of the IDI, ie new IP, new injectors, new vacum pump etc etc including a new 3inch exhaust system with a free flow muffler....a very good friend was selling his completely restored 84 F250 6.9 4speed 4x4 extended cab with every thing rebuilt or replaced except the IDI [he was going to put a cummins in it, I still have the conversion kit]. So I bought it and took off everthing new on my 86 and put it on the 84....so to answer your question-no it was not a stock muffler....hey guys like I said it doesn't make any sense to me why the exhaust is longer on an 84 than an 86 but the proof is in my driveway??!!
BC...Im still not understanding how it would be shorter then an 84, all parts swap, unles it is the Y pipe or sumthing, but every Y pipe I've seen are the same. Id like to hear what dave has to say on this one, he knows almost everything about these trucks.
I am really close to ordering this kit, but had a few questions for you about it...
1) I had asked about the Y pipe... but I quess, is it any less restrective than the stock one???
2) looking at the pics on rock auto, I can figure this one out... is the muffle 4" in and 4" out??? it looks like the piece before the muffler bumps from 3" to 4", then 4" into the muffler, and 4" out, but the piese list shows a 3" clamp on the muffler inlet???? what does it actually do???
And for one more note.... the dynomax kit listed for 6.9Ls is from 1985-1987.... 1984 is not included..... says " from 2/85 on "..... just to add to the 1984 VS 1986 story going on....

1st, the Y is 2.5" they both feed into a 3" pipe
2nd, 3" pipe to a 3"-4" adapter into 4" muffler inlet and 4" tailpipe out the back of muffler then the 5" chrome tip. So there is 2 clamps prior to muffler 3" and 4" heres a pic http://new.photos.yahoo.com/edsaws/a...803221528459/1 note the 2 clamps just before muffler.
Actually it sounds better than good - it sounds BAD-AZZ!
Now you've gone and done it. After hearing that I'm just itchin' to get to work on my exhaust. Too bad I have som many other things on my plate taking priority right now....
That is one MEAN sounding exhaust!! I can't hear mine very well without the windows rolled down. That thing is nice and loud! I could only really hear my flowmaster with the windows up when I was comming down a 3% grade with some feed in the back.
Interesting, I was looking at rockauto's website, you can get all the pipes from the Y-pipe back to right before it transitions to 4" for $163...not bad, you could throw a muffler and dump on there and probably finish the system off in 3" for $200-ish.
