Just to keep everyone updated on the mileage w/ the new exhaust I was getting 17.1 mpg's prior to install and now 18.6 mpg's. Not bad considering I've had my foot in it a lot more than normal. The new ram air intake should help to. I'll chime in with any changes to let you all know. Ed
Would the kit for the 85 6.9 fit an 83?? if not would it work with a little fabrication? also how does that muffler sound?? Ive heard flowmasters sound good on our diesels and then ive heard they dnt.
Fellro86, I was under the same assumption till I had my 3inch exhaust from my 86 6.9 4x4 4speed extended cab switched over to my 84 6.9 4x4 4speed extended cab...the muffler tech told me the 84 was longer and I told they were identical...he was right, they had to add 4-6 inches of exhaust??? Go figure?
Fellro86, I don't know...same guys installed both exhaust systems, without looking at either truck, he was saying the exhaust system on the 84 is longer than the 86 and I watch them re & re and he was right, the 84 exhaust was short and he had to add a piece to it, surprised the hell out of me! I still have both trucks??
yah i agree with felro, they should all be the same. Maybe the muffler shop was trying to screw u over, meineke tends to do that around here so im sure it happens other places.Id just like to know if it sounds good, cuz if not ill jus spend 100 more and get headers
I did a little looking around, and Banks and the like don't distinguish between any of the years, only changes were standard cab to extended and crew. Extended is about 2 foot longer than standard, and crew is about another 2 foot.
Having been under my dad's 84, and then under mine, I can't find any differences on the basics. Mine is standard vs his being extended, the motor sits in the same relation, and as I stated, Banks lists the same parts from 83-94. The only way it can be any different would be if the cab was different, the motor sat different, or the rear axle sat different, none of which I can really believe. It would seem they were trying to get some extra money or something. I guess I would have made them show me...
I guess perhaps we should clarify something... are you talking with a turbo, or NA? It is plausible they made changes on the pipes, the y-pipe may be different, but not such that they couldn't swap from one truck to another, only pipe to pipe. That's one reason I always do my own work, at least I know what and why when something like that comes up...

This where it gets interesting, the manager [who quoted me the price] and the tech [who had a very good knowledge of IDI's] doing the job were two different guys. As far as the the manager knew, it was a straight swap. I didn't get charged for the extra piece installed, I watched the entire instalation! In fact I went back 5 weeks later to add another 3inch pipe for dual exhaust, guys did a great job.
