Good morning
It's my first time here please bear with me. Im having problem with the driver side door lock. I cant open the door with the keys or even open it with the door lock switch. The only way to open it is thru the door handle inside. Locking it is not a problem. I tried to open the panel but i dont have a clue where to start figuring out what's the problem. HELP please..........the mechanic wants to charge me $90 just to check whats wrong.
Thanks

had similar problem with my 2000 explorer sport. removed door panel and plastic clip at doorlock cylinder to door rod(the rod that actually locks the door is most likely broke. went to dealer got new one for less than$5.00.also they can print you out a illustation of lock installation.

Hi,
I have a '99 Explorer with the same problem. The driver's side door lock has completely seized up. Lubricants such a WD40 do not work. Actually, the passenger side and rear locks are also starting to seize especially now with the colder weather coming. This seems to be a common problem with Explorers.
Anyone else have this problem
I'm late to this thread but I have a similar problem with my '98. Sometimes it works but most of the time it doesn't so I don't think it is a clean breakage.
WD40 is not as much of a lubricant as you would seem...it is more of an expectorant, than a lubricant...as it displaces water and moisture in the areas where things meet, and then dries out in the matter of weeks. That won't do you much good, as it will make it work fine while the residue of the WD40 is still there, but you need to use WD40 to CLEAN the area from rust and stuff, and then lube the hell out of it with something like white lithium grease or your lube of choice...
My 1998 Explorer just started having this problem last week, drivers door wont unlock about 1/2 the time unless you jiggle/yank the handle from the inside. It may be old age (like me) and over use, but it's suspicious as it occurred at the same time as new scratches on the door, perhaps an attempted break in.
Dealer said this was a common problem, about $ 300 worth.
Any hints where to begin dis-assembling the door would be greatly appreciated, so I can get to the $5 plastic clip.
It's fairly simple to remove the panel and look inside. I just had both front door panels and the rear hatch door panel off last week fixing things. There is only 3 screws and window handle to remove. The window handle has a thin plastic cover to pop loose and push to one side to get at the star hex screw. After the handle is off pop the Panel push plugs out starting at the bottom and then upward a bit with the panel. Watch the inside door handle, and pull it to open to get the panel all the way off. Pull back and then upward.
Buy a pack of Ford or GM Door Panel Push Plugs at AutoZone like place for about $3 so you can replace any that break.
Now once inside the door, it's kinda tight in there. But you should be able to check out the short linkages coming from the key lock fairly easy. Might be bent or a little too lose somewhere. Anyhow, I didn't see nearly $300 worth in mine.
Don't have an '01, but '91 might not be much different. Along the top , over the glass, is a row of screws, and down by the inside pull handle are two. If you remove these and push in and upward it should come off fairly easy. Better to have a helper since there are plastic "L" catches that release after the upward travel and its hard to handle the whole piece by yourself. Be sure not to pull it off to hard because it will break the L catches. But that's for a '91, maybe '01 too.
