What was the Old Chicken Nuggets commercial, Parts is Parts.

I have parts from vehicles I've never had or will have, good parts are better than cash.

A Grill Shell and a Cowl off a 27 Chebby went in the garage one day and was replaced by a Flathead two days latter.

"Swaps" is good! I've invested in one or two myself and never regretted it.

I'm going to go against the current on this one. I have parts from cars/trucks I haven't owned for 10 yrs. Hoarding parts just makes it that much harder for someone trying to restore theirs. I keep some stuff but I'm not storing engines, trannies, body parts (with some exceptions) or anything that's a consumable (belts, hoses). I've sold off my spare F-1 parts lately to people who needed them a lot more than I do. It leaves more room for a new project and frankly I hate a garage that's jammed with stuff on the walls and in every nook and cranny. At some point I just loose track of what's squirreled away, too.

My only caveat is that I am trimming down only after my project is complete.

The way I see it is if I need a part in the future hopefully I will have it "in stock". I only store parts I can use for my trucks. I really don't have an excess of parts, just enough for maybe one extra for each truck. I also like to keep a few extra parts in the event I need a part I don't have and I can use my extra part to swap for the part I need.

I have junked parts in the past that I thought I didn't need only to rue it later. Also, some of the parts I have junked turned out to be worth quite a bit but I didn't realize it at the time.

My wife understands my need for a little alone time, just like I respect her need for the same. If I didn't step out of the role of father and husband for a few hours once in a while, I would burn-out on those roles.

Now, it is becoming clear to me. She wanted me to buy the truck; she actually bought it for me (I picked it out). She is using the truck (it's therapeutic value) to make me into a better father and husband. That's pretty crafty. Should I resent that?

I don't know if its possible or not. The only extra parts I have are the hood hinge items that Joe Gaddy sent me.

In fact...I don't even have all the parts that are supposed to be here.

Not at all. We don't stand a chance, they will outsmart us (heck, all they have to do is wave some shiny chrome piece in front of us and we start drooling).
My wife feels the same way. She says that when I'm working out some complicated problem on the truck I'm less grumpy around the house.

My wife just asks if I have time for a couple of honey-do's every weekend. She knows I'll be working on the truck. Other than that, she just bugs me regularly to eat something.

Her only rules are: Don't fire off any power tools before 8AM, kiss her before I start, and don't track stuff into the house. She lends a second pair of hands whenever I need the help and always wants an update of the day's work. She doesn't always understand what was accomplished, but she is interested. She's amazed sometimes.

For my birthday, she got me cable service for the garage TV.

I think I'll keep her.

If there is a book on finding the right Woman, it will be written by a Woman and thereby be uncomprehensible.

Are you SURE you'd wanna read a book on finding wimmin that was written by a woman? I suspect your tastes might be a little different than hers would be... and I doubt I could help you any because I'm sure *I* wouldn't read it.

Brian, there are a few good ones out there. I think I'll keep mine. We celebrated 20 years in August. Had our good and bad times, but think the good outnumbered the bad by a long shot. She keeps pushing me gently to finish the 53, she wants to be one of the folks sitting by their truck at the shows and getting the compliments. She had a big head when I won 1st in a local show with the Mack in my avatar.

Only 3 SHELVES for parts? That barely rates entry level! I ran out of space in the garage and had a 53' trailer delivered out back and that is just about full.
At least Im neat at the shop I own in the next town, dont want customers to get the wrong idea!
Between myself, wife and remaining leech (I mean son) there are 13 registered vehicles and about as many "parts cars" or projects. Many are over at a friend who has 22 acres of woods compared to my 5.

I resent the term hoarding. Many were rescued by me from returning as a Kia or worse. Others I need as parts for the business, cant very well walk to a store and buy much in the way of carbs any longer so I hoard Holley 94's for 2-3 carb flattie and Y Block customer builds. I wont tell you how many engines I have in storage; not all Fords either! The turnover is fairly constant and I cant pass up a good deal. Besides I have another good friend who runs a towing company and I get first shot at anything heading to the crusher.

I really pity the guy with a 1 car garage, 1 shelf, a neat bench and no distractions to make life more interesting. Since the prevailing thoughts on the creation/expansion of the universe is the Chaos Theory, why should I be any different??
