When replacing upper control arm/add chamber adjuster?
I am doing new upper control arms and new lower ball joints in a 01 Expy. For those of you that did this do I need to install a Chamber adjuster kit, if so where does it go and is it hard to install ?
You shouldn't need to. After you get done with the work, make sure to take the truck in for an alignment. You should always get your vehicle aligned after replacing suspension parts (struts in cars as well).
According to the front end mechanic I spoke with yesterday regarding replacing the upper control arms on my 98 Expedition, it will require a camber kit to do the required front end alignment.
2 wheel drive or 4 wheel drive? I have a 2wd and have bought the lowers and this week will get the uppers so I can change them out. Will I need something else?
I did not install a kit and had it aligned and everything seems fine. The upper control arm bolts in a slotted or oblong hole so that is how I believe they adjust Chamber. For caster I believe you need a kit, NAPA did not list much in alignment parts.
My front end mechanic said I would need it for him to do the alignment. Cost is about $7, so not a big deal. Suggest you install control arms/ ball joints with zerks so you can grease in the future though.
Cam bolts I believe its called. I've taken a look at those and was planning to do my front suspension, never got around it - reason, other than being lazy and broke is I checked my front end and justy couldn't make the ball jonts etc play.
Anyway, I would install it if it doesn't cost that much.
But fyi, was told I needed it when Sears tech did the check for alignment - and yet the guys at Country Fair tires aligned it without any parts replaced after I lowered my XP. The hole is in fact oblong for the two arms of top a-arms, so it can be adjusted, I checked it out with mirror.
I ordered all Moog parts online. I have 88,000 miles and all rubber boots are torn, plus the front end squeaks like crazy. I asked the mechanic about changing out the control arm bushings also, but he swears the noise is from the ball joints. The upper control arm comes with new bushings, but he's just changing the ball joint on the lower with a Moog joint. I'm leaving that up to him, but if it still squeaks when he's finished, my wife is gonna slap the#%@& out of him!!
