Well I got her...

I've talked in a thread or two below about a 87 f-150 I was looking at buying. I got her for $1350. She's a 87 f-150, single cab long bed, 5.0, 4spd, 4x4. 188k. Originally used as a work truck.

So I have a few questions:
It has two tanks, the rear back area was bent in by something (not a wreck from the looks of it), maybe running into a pole, and it its destroyed the connection of that rear gas tank to the part where you put the gas in. Since I dont really need by the front 15gal gas tank, can I take the other tank out? Also, if I do, can I use the switch has kind of a kill switch, so my truck wont be stolen? As in just switch it to B tank, even though it isnt there, and when I'm ready to go, switch it to A and I'll be fine?

Thoughts? I'll have more questions coming...

Another question;
I am leaking a bit around the oil pan gasket. I know this is a common thing with these trucks, so my question would be, what would I replace when I fix the oil pan gasket? Replace the oil pump, gasket? Clean the oil pan, clean the oil pickup line are obvious'.
I also think I need to replace the oil pressure switch, as well.

When you realize what kind of mileage your truck is going to get, you'll want both tanks

Adding a kill switch is easy, and there are many ways of doing it. What you're thinking would work, assuming the back tank isn't there.

Since your truck is a stick, ther'es a switch on the clutch pedal assembly that cuts out the starter if the clutch isn't pushed to the floor. Install another switch in series with that one, and you're good to go.

It's a common thing that aging gaskets leak, yes, but that's not specific to Ford. All things leak as they get older, and the more people ignore the problem the worse it gets.

As far as what to replace, just the gasket and clean out the line if you have acceptable pressure as measured with a pressure gauge. Do not trust the factory gauge. Some of them are connected to a switch, rather than a sensor, so anything over 4-5psi will register in "normal". Obviously 4-5 psi is not good.

Oil pumps aren't that expensive either, so if you want to do the job while the pan is off anyway, I won't tell you otherwise. I do things like that as well, to avoid problems later.

The only issue is that changing the oil pan gasket can be done without jacking the motor up. If you replace the oil pump or the pickup screen, you need to jack the motor up far enough to get the pan off, which normally requires taking the upper intake off.

Yeah, I plan on going ahead and replacing the oil pump and cleaning the pickup screen, just because I'm there. To make sure I only do the job once.

Anyone have any thoughts on the gas tank issue?

just replace the pickup screen. the design makes it hard to clean and it only cost 15 dollars or so.

my 87 has problems with fuel tanks as well pumps gas from return back into wrong tank I had gas pouring out the front tank filltube so what i did was take the mechanical flow divider i think thats what its called its the selector on the frame i have tried to find a replacement part but its almost like they dont make them anymore it is switched by fuel from which tank i select withswitch in cab but there is no motor or 12 volt power to the divider valve so what i did was unplug front tank and got a foot of plastic tube and bypass the divider and i tried switching in cab to front tank and it never shut off im lost on this issue i hope you have better luck than me i have no experience with duel tanks but it runs lol
