i have a 1990 ford f-150 with a 302 in it. The engine always did leak alittle oil. I let my friend use it for the weekend and he overfilled it will oil so he wouldn't have to put alittle oil in it everyday. Now since it was overfilled it idles rough and smokes white/blue smoke. Does anyone know what could cause this. I was thinking valve rubbers but i dunno. thanks
How much did he overfill it? If there is so much oil in it that it can't drain back into the pan it is going to go somewhere. Blue smoke is burning oil. When you say it uses a little oil how much do you mean? Also is it just leaking out? I think more information is needed.
well he didnt really say how much he overfilled it but when i got it back it was about 1/2 inch over the full mark on the dipstick but this was 3 days after he poured the oil in it. so i think he put about a litre over the full mark. a yes the oil does drip out of it (around the basepan gasket) and it smokes blue smoke through the exhaust and idles really rough. the blue smoke and the rough idle came after he overfilled it will oil. and now when you floor it the oil comes out of the back of the motor somewhere(it always dripped when it sit but nothin like this), so you have to drive it easy. i know i have to put a new gasket and seals on the base pan to correct the oil drip problem, but did the overfilling of the oil cause this blue smoke and really rough idle? thanks for the replys
If he overfilled it that much, he might of clogged the pcv and possibly fouled out a plug or two. By overfilling with oil he might of made the rear main leak more. If it was a small leak the added oil and added pressure made it worst.
