I'm pretty new at this and am trying to learn as I go, so please pardon any ignorance on my part. I have a 61 F100 with a 223 in it. I recently put in a new water pump and belt in it and since then things are all screwy. It starts real rough and won't stay running, with or without the choke. The generator light stays on unless I'm really giving it gas. In this case it stays running but gas flows out the balance tube on top of the Holley single barrell. When it stalls, gas pours out the balance tube as well. Don't know if this corresponds to the pump/belt job but any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. By the way, before I did this work, I had adjusted the idle speed and fuel mixture and she would run fine all day.
[font color=red size=4]Since it was running good before, I would think that it is something simple that you have overlooked (which is easy to do, believe me). The water pump/belt change should have nothing to do with the way it runs (besides temp related).
Try the easy things first. Look over the hoses, lines and wires, makes sure they are all in place, tight and not kinked/bent.
The gas pouring out sounds like the float may be stuck open in the carb (common problem on an old carb, nothing you did). Try tapping on the float bowl with the handle of a screw driver, sometimes it will shake it loose. If that won't work, you may have to look into rebuilding the carb, not as hard as it sounds.;-)
ignoring the carburetor problems- i had the same sort of problem. replaced my old water pump, and suddenly the engine wouldn't heat up- had to drive 2 hours on the coldest day of the year, with my heater blowing no heat- turned out, my thermostat was shot, too...previously, between the bad water pump and bad thermostat, the engine would warm up- but with a good water pump and thermostat stuck open, it stayed cold. sounds crazy, i know-
Thanks for the suggestions, but the carb is still shooting gas out the balance tube. Guess it's rebuild time. Think the generator is on it's way out now too. Sometimes I wonder if it's all worth it, then I look at my truck and realize yeah it is.
