I have been told that my belt tensoner is seized up. This just happened and the van hasen't been driven since. I was wonder where is it and hows the easiest way to get it off?

Thanks Ron

Well, it's obviously under the hood and keeping the accessory belt tight. Maybe if you tell us the year and engine size somebody with a similar model can give us a clue. As a rule a belt tensioner isn't extremely expensive and should be a simple fix. Make sure you don't drive the van very far or hopefully not all or the engine could overheat and destroy itself.

Its a 1995 awd aerostar with a 4L.

I was told here in Canada that the tightener is about 160 bucks.

Ouch! You may be right. I have a '96 4.0 2WD Aero and if they share the same part, it could be pricey. The idler and the tensioner are on one fairly large piece of aluminum bracket. Do you have the single serpentine belt like I do?
Sometimes you can get replacement individual bearings. You might give it a try.

The tensioner rarely explodes. usually the idler pulley bearing goes bad and these are about 20 bucks and is replaceable.

On my 4 liter engine, it looks like the tensioner and idler pulleys both use the same bearing, so either one is just as likely to fail. They should be easy to find in your local scrap yard. Note that the tensioner pulley on the 4 liter engine has a reverse thread bolt. You need to remove the pulleys to get easier access to the bolts that hold the bearing and mounting assemblies onto that big aluminum bracket.
