Egr?

So I've been throwing around the idea of longtube headers. The only thing I'm not sure of the EGR coming off the #1 header tube. As I understand in the EGR just let's in exhuast gases to lower combustion chamber temps. This then lowers NOx levels for emissions purposes. So I could in theory just let the tube hang off the EGR not connected to the exhaust and let it intake straight air. All the sesnor is is a potentiometer which justs tells how far open the vavle is anyway. Or could I pipe it to just down below the headers? I know the first option will hurt emissions, just toying with ideas for now.

The drawback to drawing int clean air is the "vacuum leak effect it would have bot to mention the lack of recirculation that helps with the emissions. (This is one of the other reasons I like the 302... EGR comes up out of the head and through a passthrough in the intake to the valve. Exhaust manifolds never affect EGR plumbing.) But anyhow, Other than the obvious emissions concerns, You could probably reroute the plumbing to suit your needs without too much difficulty.

I must be missing something here. I don't see how I would get a vacuum leak, the EGR Valve would still ope and close like normal right? I mean the computer doesn't know exaculty what's coming through, just how far the valve's open. But the plumbing I was just gonna have it welded in downstream on the same side and put the O2 on the other pipe.

But your engine does know what is coming thru the EGR valve, and it is setup to expect exhaust gas, not "air" "Air" will lean out the cylinders fuel mixture. Exhaust gas wil not lean out the fuel mixture as technicaly it is dead, IE not combustible, devoid of any "air"

"Air" - a oxygen/nitrogen mixture. A few other gases are also present. No need to be into the exact chemical breakdown. The oxygen part is what we are concerned with here.
