My wife recently ran the gas tank down to almost empty. When she filled the truck up the gauge stayed at empty. Now the needle is up to 1/4 tank. Anyone else ever had this problem? Seems like the sender is stuck.
Fuel Gauge stopped working 93 Explorer
Where do I start with my problem of my fuel gauge on my 93 Explorer not working. Should I start at the fuel tank, instrument panel or where??? I see a little movement toward empty when I turn my ignition on but it is full of fuel.
93’s Gas Gauge Is Working Again
Positives & Negatives:
1. My 93 Explorer’s gas gauge is working again after I added the $5.00 float.
2. The work was not hard but Firestone’s 42.00 diag. and 80.00 labor is OK. At least the 80.00 is worth
the labor and your safety.
3. I took breaks but it was about a 4 hours job without any help.
1. I took breaks to rest my arms due to working w/o help that could have saved about 1.5 hr.
2. I did not have the tool to remove the fuel pump/float from the tank but channel locks worked.
3. With my passenger side’s wheels (only) 8” high, about 2” more would have been better.
They've had some issues with the fuel level module (bolts onto the fuel pump assembly... on an '02 it may only come as part as the pump assembly) on these.. they develop a film over the contacts from what Ford claims is "High sulfur content in the gasoline"... try changing brands and run a few tanks and see what happens.
Another possibility is if the key isn't turned off while refueling it won't go to full. If you haven't already make sure it's turned off for a minute then restart and see what the gauge does.

High resistance in the fuel level sensor will cause the fuel gauge to read full, or past full.....
