My daughter just wrote me a note saying that her 99 explorer high and low 4x4 lights are blinking. It is set in the auto mode. I have no idea what is causing this and I live about 750 miles from her so looking at it is a problem.
Anyone have a idea what is the problem
Thanks, Chuck
Edit:Search worked.
Found out it may be the solenoid on the transfer case
I had the same problem on my 97 (4x4 light blinking and intermitent window problems). There is wiring conector just before the transfer case that gets pretty dirty (a fairly large plug with about 8 wires). Pull it apart and clean the heck out of it with electrical connector cleaner, let it dry and put some electrical connector grease in it. Buy the speed sensors for the front and rear wheels (they are on the back of the transfer case and are relativeley easy to take out and install) and change them out. Replace the transfer case fluid. I did this in the beginning of the summer and have not had a problem since. If you let it go to long the 4 wheel drive starts to engage at low speeds (pulling in and out of parking spaces, etc.). Total repair, about $100.00 - smile on my face not having to take it to the dealer - priceless! My 2 cents.
The T/C has a electrical/magnetic operated clutch (single brown wire on T/C) which is deenergized when in the off/auto position,
12vdc is applied to this clutch when switched to 4hi (no motor movement), engaging the front shaft.
When switched from 4hi to 4 low the motor turns a shaft in the T/C, changing the gear ratio.
If the clutch remains engaged with the switch in the off/auto position, check for power on the brown wire.
If there is no power, check the condition of the fluid, old dirty, thick fluid should be drained and refilled with transmission fluid.
If the drive train is still locked in 4 hi, you may have a mechanical problem with the ball cam device on the clutch which will require dismantling.
Your other option would be to drop the front driveshaft and use the truck as a 2wd
With the controltrac model the hale sensors detect differential in the rotation of the front and rear shafts (slippage), applying power to the clutch as required. Make sure that the tires are the same circumferance and properly inflated.
