Let's start with the what may seem like silly questions:
Are there disks in the magazine?
Are the disks right side up?
If yes and yes, check the connection to the cd changer, it's on the front of the unit down low. You might have to take off the plastic cover to see it.
Does the changer "feed" the CD's in the magazine? In other words, does it load a CD? You should be able to hear it making some noise after you put the mag in.
If so, let's check out the connections behind the radio. Break out your radio removal tool (or cut up a metal hanger) remove the radio and make sure all three harnesses are connected and none of the wires are visably split. It's real tight behind the radio and split wires aren't uncommon.
When I push the magazine in, I can see the Laser tray move side to side as if to load a disk but it doesn't. It stops at every disk location and just moves to the end after checking each spot. Then it stops and the message on the radio is "empty mag"
I pulled the changer out and the radio and all coneections are good.
That you can do, there are AUX and iPod adapters available from www.pie.net. You can also try taking the changer apart and putting it back together . I've actually had some luck doing this with audio components fritzing out. With these changers it's either a sensor or a mechanical issues and sometimes just taking it apart and putting it back together realigns things.
I got a FDIP-01 on ebay for cheap. You unblug your cd player from the radio and plug this in instead and you can connect your radio to the ipod. There are some things like you can only access playlists and stuff, but the radio should control song selection and fast forward and stuff.
Here are notes: allowing the alphanumeric display on the track title on the radio's display.
FEATURES:
Universal iPod controller allows direct feed of any external audio signal to Ford vehicles.
Provides switched voltage source for charging
Allows play list and track selection from OEM radio
just do a search on ebay and you'll find a few.
I haven't hooked mine up yet, but I don't have a ipod. I just saw it for like $0.99 so I had to buy it. I'm sure I'll get a ipod at some time and I'lll be able to use it then.
A common problem with CD players/changers when they fail to "read a disc" is poor focus at the laser. This can be caused by either a weak/defective laser or a cloudy/dirty lense assy. Before trashing the changer, try a good CD lense cleaner. It looks like a CD, and as the lense/laser assy moves back and forth "looking" for data, it cleans the lense. Sometimes it may take 4-5 passes. They are sold everywhere from Walmarts to A/V superstores like Best buy for between 5.00 to 15.00. Avg is about 8.00.
