Changing to 4.30's

Hi Guys,

Newbie here. Have an 04 F-250 with V-10 and 3.73 rear axel. (Supercab 4X4). Want to change to 4.30's for more towing capacity. Do I need to change the front and the rear or just the rear? Were is a good(cheap) place to purchase the gear sets? Any other advice is appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

if you ever plan on using you 4 wheel drive again you need to change both front and back. 4.30 gear is a ford manuf. gear which means you have to buy from ford or some ford oem dealer (your looking $600-$700 a set and you need two sets). Im not sure what size tires you have put on your rig but the only reason i would go 4.30's is if that was the ratio i needed to get my ride back to stock. 4.10 and 4.56's are aftermarket gears and will say you close to $600 not having to buy OEm ford parts. if you have stock tires and just want better pulling i would go 4.10's but if you have 35" tires or bigger i would go 4.56's and be done with it. If you don't know anything about changing gears i would let a pro handle the job because you want it to be done right and it ain't easy. Normal labor on a ring a pinion swap is around $300 per axle and if you go aftermarket gears you can get the whole set install for around $1200.

You have to change both axles if you ever want to use 4x4 again. I got mine throught the dealer but a lot of people like Randy's ring and pinion.

I certainly recommend Randys Ring and pinion. They are good to deal with...and have quality parts.

4.30 Yukon gear sets are my recommendation! The 4.30 and OEM stock tires is just about the best combo for towing. You will love that setup!

Yes, you will have to do both front and rear axles (as already mentioned). Also..."cheap" and gear swaps do NOT go in the same sentence. It is costly and could run with labor $1800-$2200 total.

Good luck...

Check which rears you have I have a dana60 front and Ford Sterling 10.5 rear diff.
At the local 4X4 shop the dana60 gears are about $250 but the Ford Sterling is about $500 without the install kits
then theres the labor ($) unless you do it yourself.
I was going to swap the 4.10's for 3.73's but I think the forum talked me out of it.

i just changed my 3.73 to 4.56 and i love them. i have 4.5" dr lift with 37/22" mud terrain tires and i was getting around 13mpg and running at 10# boost at 70mph w/ 3.73. Going to 4.56 gave me a alittle shorter gear than i need but it made up for the extra load of lift and tires added to the truck. I get 17mpg and im back to around 3-5# boost at 70mph(gps). Plus the torque is retardedly bad-a$$ if i could get these tires to hook on pavement i can almost promise you this thing would ride a wheelie or at least one tire. It feels like it is even when your leaving two black marks for 100ft plus. thanks to diablo programmer 60hp, full exhuast, k&n intake, and the bad-a 4.56 gears.(been running the performance parts for almost 40,000 miles with no problems what so ever)

I am not so sure that is correct. I had 3.73's in my truck and recently switched over to 4.30's. I bought my set from Randy's Ring & Pinion, and the gearsets were manufactured by a company called "Yukon" I paid about $900 for both sets and the overhaul kits.

i retract my statement yukon does opt for a 10.25 long yoke 4.30 gear that will app to a ford 10.5. to buy a true 10.5 inch 4.30 the part is going to be OEM and it ain't going to be cheap hinting the reason you payed $900 for aftermarket OUCH!!!
