Hi, everybody, I am installing a factory A/C in my 93 Ford Ranger, it had a dealer install before but I have went through two compressors for different reasons on both. I have installed the compressor and condenser so far and ready to install the lines, I have all the o-rings on the ends, my question is how do you install o-ring lock springs? I have ever done these before, the dealer lines just bolted on. Could someone tell me the proper way install the lock springs?
Installing the locking fittings is easy, you just push them together after you have installed and lubed the o-ring. I think what you are asking is more around how do you separate the spring lock coupling. You need a special separator tool that gets under the spring and releases it so that you can separate the coupling. These separators come in different sizes based on the refrigerant line size and are usually part of a kit available at NAPA, Autozone, Pep Boys, etc. The garter spring is part of the coupling and unless it is damaged doesn't need to be removed. To remove it from the coupling you just need a sharp hooked tool, not a scrwdriver to pull the spring out. The new spring just slips over the connector and into the coupling.
Thanks John, I just received my metal disconnect tool today from Rock Auto, I was wondering if the spring went into the coupling first and then used the tool to install or slide the spring onto the line, push the coupling together and then install the spring. I have a few more questions now. What is used to lube the o-rings? and, The o-rings at the compressor, are these lube also?
