Smile Drive Line Wobble!

Hey Folks,

I have developed a uncontrollable wobble in my truck. Its an 87 ranger 2.9L with a 5speed trans. The clutch is less then a year old just put in over last winter. I use the truck to haul wood & to plow snow. I know I know its a little truck & not made for all that. But why have a truck if you can use it for working. Anyway you cant even get out of first gear without it wobbling out of control. I know how to put the trans & transfer case in & out of it but I don't know how to test either one for problems. Should I pull them & bring them to a shop to have them checked or have it towed there?? Ouch$$$$
Any help would be great!

Thanx Matt

Are you sure it's not u-joints in the drive line?

Driveline wobble? As in driveshaft whipping around? My '86 had a delicate little flower of a driveshaft, with dainty u-joints that needed watching and replacement twice in 62,000 miles.

But it sounds like you are talking steering wobble. Again, my '86 had the Ford "Better Idea" crapola plastic fantastic bushings in the tie road and all. It wore out and it was like herding goats to steer it.

If you have loose steering parts and a little alignment issue, a speed wobble, even at low speed, will be the order of the day.

So, either way, I'd either be under it with a fine tooth comb, or I'd be at a trusted shop with a credit card and handgun to make sure they did it right and then pay them to fix it.

Thank You for the input.I have checked all the u-joints & front end parts. There is nothing wrong all is tight. I have owned the truck for 4 years & have put allot of time & $$$$ into the steering & suspension. I have all new tires & alignment done to the truck. I can't find anything wrong in that area. Since I work the truck so hard I have put 3 new clutches in the truck with in a four year time span. Now I know what your saying (This guy can't work a clutch!). I have been driving standard transmissions for 30 years from cars to the big rigs I know what I'm doing. I think its somthing with the transmission or transfercase. When you drive the truck its like its pulling a 747 with it brakes on & a LOUD screaming noise commin from the trans area. Also the truck shakes like it has 4 flat tires.I know the trucks new clutch took a beating this past plow & fire wood season so thats why I think its in the
formentioned area. Any help would be great.

Matt

With a problem this severe, a tear down is in order. Pilot busing worn out, input shaft bearings loose, input shaft/clutch disc all crooked under power?

Something drastically wrong in the TC?

Spun bearings or bad bearings in the trans?

With that amount of noise and drag, something is going to give.

It sounds like you may have reached the limit of your abilitiy to diagnose and fix. Time to get the checkbook out and find someone with a good track record to look, listen and figure it out.

As Dirty Harry said, "..a good man knows his limitations..."

the fm 145/146 has a history of the input shaft going bad, and wobbling, then breaking (taking the rest of trans with it). i would check the end play of the input shaft
