272 Ford engine

I'm replacing my 272 engine with a 292. It should
go in without much difficulty, though I'm told the heads are not interchangeable. Is this true?
Also, my 272 developed a crack in the block
immediately after installing new oil seals and main bearings. Now it's junk.
The mechanic says these engine blocks never crack;
it's the first he's seen in 35 years. Is he right?
Or do I need a new mechanic?

The old Y-blocks were very stout engines and not prone to cracking. The only real problem was losing oil up to the rockers. The 272, 292, and 312 were all essentially identical with the exception of bore and stroke. All heads should be interchangable although combustion chamber size should be noted. The best heads were the 57 312s since they had larger valves and produce a 9.7:1 compression ratio. A 4V intake manifold from a 312 will bolt right on to your 292. Although I am a closet Y-block lover, this engines time has long since passed. Drawbacks are soft valve seats (not for unleaded gas), solid lifters, oil starvation to the rockers, and limited availability of parts. Rather than putting big $ into an outdated engine you should at least consider investing in a 1977 or later small block (302 or 351W). As for not seeing a cracked Y in 35 years --- they have not been made for 37 years now (1962).

the last y-block was produced in 1964. the cars stopped using them in 62 but they were installed in trucks until 1964. i had a 292 in a 64 and it was a good engine. when i rebuilt it i couldnt find cams or intakes or headers. but after a LONG search i did find some of it. its expensive but it can be found. (id rather have a 460 but that just my preference.)

As for lack of parts, check out the T-bird sites. I have a 292, and absolutely love it. as far as cams, Isky Cams have several listed in their catalog, Comp cams will custom grind one for less than $200. Heddman hedders has headers listed that will fit, Kanter auto parts has rebuild kits and engine components. Sorry, I don't have all the url's; just use your favorite search engine.
'62 was the last year that Y-blocks were used in cars, but were continued in trucks until '64.

Steve, What year and model is your truck? Ford had stopped using the 272's in mid year 1958, and started using the 292's. When they ran short on supply of 292's, they would put in a 312. Just curious.

Hey, for all you Y-block lovers, I've just convinced Ken to give the Y-block forum another try, and I'd hate to think that my request was for naught...
Perfect place to ask about these vintage powerhouses! :-)
