Has anybody had experience or heard of swapping a 5 spd from an '86 F250 into a '69 F250? The '86 is 460 powered(well, used to be) and 2wd, the '69 is 390 powered and also 2wd, with a C6 auto. I realize lots of work, I'm ok with that. Simply hoping there's not much fabrication involved.
390 (FE) bellhousings are not compatible with 460 bell housings. All the 5sp 460 transmissions (ZF) I know of have the bell housing as part of the transmission housing. So, a ZF won't bolt to a 390.
Try to find a 5sp with the tranny and bellhousing seperate. Then search junkyards for a bellhousing for a 390. They should bolt up and it should fit your 390, given the spline count and input shaft diameter are compatable
There is no such thing as a 5 speed in a Ford truck with a removable bellhousing. If you want a 5 speed behind an FE, the ONLY way to do it is with an adapter from advanced adapters.
Some of these sites have emails for inquiries. Since the bell to trans pattern is the same for bb vs. sb ford, you might be in business. The ones I looked at were for sb.
Andy, you're mistaken. There are indeed five speeds with removeable bells for the FE. The trannies to look for are the NP542, the Clark 260 and Clark 280 series. I have a Clark 285V, that has 6.99/4.09/2.24/1.47/1.00 gears. Bolted right onto the back of my FE with the bell from the Clark. NO adapters needed. Came from a 76 F6 or 700. Was cheap too. Ok, it basically sounds like the 5 speed that would be easy for me isn't what I'm looking for. The FE bolt pattern is so not the same as the sb ford it ain't even funny, although I can see how there would be an adapter for it. As for the Clark idea, it'd be good, but if I'm going to go manual, I'm thinking overdrive as well, given that I won't be rock crawling in a 2wd. Thanks for all the input anyway guys.
Ok, just realized you said bell to tranny, not engine to bell bolt pattern.

Reason: stupidity
Are they hard to find? The reason I was thinkin overdrive is for fuel mileage with my 4.10 Dana 60 rearend. As is now, the best I've gotten since I put in a 390 in place of the 360 is 10mpg on the highway.
