I am going to look at an 86 F250 this weekend. 6.9 with a banks turbo kit. Here's the ad 86 f250 6.9idi turbo What all should I look for. He has replaced some items already. Truck had a blown engine when he bought it and he already had an 86 2wd and wanted 4x4 so he bought the truck and swapped in the motor. New to these engines. Have owned a 7.3 and own a duramax now, so I know a little about diesels just not these 6.9 with turbo.
Make sure the engine is COLD when you get there so you can see how well it starts cold. That can save you a lot of grief if he tries to hide a starting (glow plug, etc..) problem.
He lists a lot of work on the ad, ask to see the receipts. Seems like a high price to me, add up what he paid to see if its worth it.
I have read that thread already and know the glow plug issue. He has receipts and there is no way I'm paying the asking price. Any key items to look for with the banks turbo kit?
The turbo's pretty straight forward, as long as there's no excessive shaft play any other problems would just be leaks and not a difficult repair.
The truck's a sound platform, 6.9 with the C6 means no sophisticated electrical components. May want to check the engine's serial number to make sure that the engine he swapped in isn't an early block. 85.5+ are the better 6.9s. But if it's an older one that can be a bargaining item.
The engine is from an 87 truck. If I read everything right that means it is not as strong as the pre 85 motors and more susceptible to cavitation if not properly cared for. correct?
No, the '87 is the best year. Last year of the 6.9, first year of the new rockers and glow plug system, plus the good block.
