I have two problems that I need help with I have a 95 2 door explorer 2 wheel drive 145000 miles. I trailered it from arizona to NC, all wheels of the ground. I took it off and drove it and when I hit a bump I heard noise from the front passenger side and noticed it had a lean, I seems to have gotten more extreme over the next few days but no more noise. An hour later I turned on the AC and the belt started sliding across the compresor burning the belt. I turned off the ac but it does it even if I turn on the defroster. It makes a lot of noise and the when I turn on any climate control, sliding across the pulley. I need to fix it on the cheap myself due to my financial situation.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I do have some mechanical skill and want to get input before I take my familys only vehicle apart.
Thanks so much in advance
Chris Dolan
AC: If the belt is still slipping after disconnecting the compressor, you can put a non-AC belt on thus bypassing the compressor.
Lean: how was the truck transported? was it tied down on a flat bed? I don't think the 95s had radius arm bushings. I suggest looking at all the right front suspension parts. If it's leaning that much, it should be obvious. Use a tape measure to measure height differences between the 2 sides.
I don't have one to run out and inspect, but Marragtop may be right on the radius arms. My reference was a Chilton '91 to '99 repair manual (#26688), and page 8-4 shows a diagram (figure 7) with an ambiguous caption.
Take a look at your front suspension.. i'm not sure that one has radius arms.. I think a '95 has control arms (although 2wd may still have the older setup).
Did you strap it down real tight? If your coil springs were weak to begin with keeping them compressed tighter than usual may have... well... collapsed them! Also jack it up under the control arm or I beam and check the ball joints out real well.
As for your A/C.. i think your compressor is locked up. The compressor will kick on with ANY setting except for dedicated "vent" and "floor". Kind of stupid design but I didn't build it. Have someone turn on the a/c while you're looking at the front of the compressor... if it's not spinning it's locked up.. that simple.
