3.0 vs. 4.0

I'm looking to by an older 4x4 Ranger. Which is the better engine? Will they both last about the same length of time?

I've heard good out of the 4.0 and 3.0. 3.0 has been around longer.

If both engines are in good condition, they should last a virtually identical amount of time. I've had personal experience with a 4.0 with over 200K. It still ran like new, but the tranny was toasted (M5OD) from power shifts.

Performance wise the 4.0 is leaps ahead, yet the 3.0 is also known as a durable long running engine but lacks in the real power that a V-6 should have.

They normally call it the 3slow. A bit more power then the 2.3 and the gas mileage of the 4.0.

My 4 litre has 105K miles and runs like new. Burns no oil.
PLENTY of power in the small truck, too.

In a 4x4 you want the 4.0, alot more torque. Call me crazy, but if I didn't get the 4.0, I would rather have the 4 banger, It has more power potential in the long run than the 3.0, and you can rev it like crazy .

Awesome! Thanks guys. I hope the 4.0 isn't as hard to find as a 351 F-150!

The 4.0 is so easy to find, around here you can get hit by one if you look too hard. if your looking for something to keep for the longrun, the 4.0 is the better dael. i did alot to mine, and at 100k it's like a new engine.

Alan, isn't most of your engine essentially new, lol. I have to agree with Wendell about having a 2.3l DTech over the Vulcan 3.0, for virtually the same HP output stock, why not have the mileage of a 4cyl?
