Exhaust laws

I'm in Utah, and the state law for exhaust systems states that there must be: A manifold, a head pipe, a muffler, a catalytic converter (on vehicles newer than '75), a tailpipe, and must exit the periphery of the vehicle. I was wondering as to how to run my exhaust on the truck I plan on rebuilding...
Has any of you seen the BIG truck style, with a long muffler and a turn-down right behind the cab? I would like to run a 29" Flowmaster "Purple horny" glasspack off of my headers and put a turn-down on the end. How legal would that be? Does anyone know how they count the periphery of the vehicle on trucks? would it be just the cab part, or the bed as well? I'll probably end up calling Utah Highway Patrol just to ask, but thought I'd ask here, not just for the legality stuff, but for opinions as well.

Thanks,
-Andrew

Exhaust laws

Hey thanks for the laws! If I remember correctly (my grandma is a judge) she said that the pipe must clear the sides or rear or front of the vehicle not from the under side. But who knows this could be different because our trucks are older and stuff.

You probably could talk to a local garage that does inspections.
They are the only ones you will have to worry about anyway
unless you are going to make it real noisy (cop caller).
I remember talking to the garage, and they said the exhaust had
to exit so many inches away from the passenger compartment. In
the case of a pickup that would be the cab only. I wouldn't
exit the exhaust underneath the vehicle. It makes it too noisy
in the cab.

Exhaust laws

Andrew,

I just picked up a 65 F-100, and I am planning to do a little modification to the exhaust as well. One thing I plan to do is take the pipes from where they exit now (under the bed angled out in front of the tires), and move the exits to after the axle. I might either go with turn downs just past the axle or the stainless 3 1/2" tips like I have on my 88.

Rigt now it has some turbo mufflers on it, but I might end up changing those in the future as well (like when they blow out) and with a 390 it probably won't be too long.

But I bought the truck un AZ, ad I guess they never bothered to nail the guy for his exhaust.

As a practical matter, I would suggest that you consider running the exhaust all the way out to the rear bumper. My friend's 64 with the 292 and a short box, had his cherry bomb system exiting just in front of the rear wheels. It sounded nice but the constant rumble in the cab got real old real quick so he changed it. When I got my truck, it had huge 3 inch pipes also right in front of the wheels; I ditched that setup at the start.
And for those wondering, Arizona doesn't have any restrictions on the placement of the exhaust system; all you have to worry about is whether the officer thinks it is too loud. Cherry bombs aren't a problem.
