where can I get info on how to fix my linkage problem. I have a 62 stepside with an 8 cyc (another prob is I don't know what size engine I have)and the shift pattern gets hung up if I'm not very..very careful going in and out of gear. my Dad had one of the orig econoline vans and it did the same thing. he never got that fixed either, I'd like to try an fix this. I'm going to put a couple of bushings in but I don't think that's going to fix it. Anybody know if you have to go into the steering column or what???

You can buy parts for your column shifter from http://www.f100.com or call 1-800 563-3151. Rebuilding a column and gear is not a big deal, just use a steering wheel puller to prevent damage. Get a repair manual and read it. Is it possible that your shifting problem is in the transmission?

William,
Thanks for the reply. Is there a particular repair manual that you would rec. I have used the Haynes books a lot but i can't find one for the 62 stepside. Could it be in the column or the trans? you know which one would be the worst - well thats where it will be. as to parts availability, i'm in charlotte, nc and have bill carpenters close to my office.
thanks
Len
For the factory Shop manual, have you tried the online store here on FTE?
I think that your engine is probably a 292 Y-8. There is a message board, down toward the bottom of the list for Y-blocks. There's a thread in there called What is A Y-block or something like that... I've posted pictures, and there's lots of info so that you can identify your engine if It's what I think it is... Check it out

Nothing, and I mean nothing, stirs the soul, saying I'm a bad **** like lettin'em rip with a window shaking, fuel gulpin, carbon monoxide belchin, attention gettin, V-oh my LORD!-8!
Had the same problem with my 3-spd, before the C4 conversion. Mine sometimes would not shift into 2nd gear while being driven. It was almost as if there was no slot at all for it to go in. After taking the column apart, it looked as if the plastic "shift spacer type things" in the bottom of the column were worn. No temp fix, unless you just tear it down and start replacing. Be sure to make disassembly notes, in case you have any problems with the re-assembly.
