Ford C700 shifter linkage

Hello,

What I got is a 1975 Ford cab over that we're using for a grain truck and the shift linkage is really sloppy. Does anyone know where to get new carrier bearings for the shifter shafts or have any ideas how to fix it? I really enjoy hauling with this truck and don't want to scrap it any time soon

Those trucks are text book mystery shifters.. Im not sure there is much you can do. Tighten the cables?

Good news is there are 4 easy holes.. 2nd and 3rd arent as easy.. I drove one around for a long time before I found one with an automatic. 5+2 wasnt fun. Truck weighed over 30K too, so couldnt miss any..

Having the auto makes the truck super easy to drive...

You'll need to get someone to move the shifter around while you use a light and watch what the linkages are doing. The u-joints are the same as what is usually used on a PTO setup. TruckPro or any big truck parts store should be able to help. If the shifter itself is sloppy where it goes into the floor, wellllll, I'm not sure on that.

Those c series shifters where sloppy from the factory, they need a ton of grease and have to be lubed weekly if it does'nt have the factory boots on the joints. I have a 68 c950 and
i had the same problem till i started geasing the hell out of it

yeah one of the carriers where the linkage travels on is completely wollered out there is a brass collar thats moved about three inches down the linkage, but even with it in the right spot theres 1/2 inch of play all the way around the shaft. I'll post up some pictures tomorrow.

So far I just push up to the left and let out the clutch slowly to get it in reverse and then i know straight down is 1st even then its easy to miss and hit 3rd.

I'd like to fix it so grandpa can drive it without getting stuck somewhere

by the way whats a c950 have engine and transmission wise?

I just purchased a 1971 C700 grain dump with the Clark 5+2 transmission and the same shifting problems as you described. I saw your post and wondered if you or anyone else found a fix beyond the suggested constant greasing. I bought the truck to haul some rock on our cattle farm. I really like the truck other than it is an adventure to shift.

I have a 68 C800 that was a fire truck with under 25k miles. The 534 engine blew so I'm parting it out, it has a spicer 5 spd with all shift linkage in tact. I'm in north central Ky between Louisville and Owensboro, contact me if I can help.

Thanks for the response! I have been to Harned many times over the years. I bought a nice Herford bull from a fellow there 3 or 4 years ago. Thanks for letting me know about your C800 and your willingness to sell parts. I bought this C700 from a farm family in central Indiana a couple of weeks ago. I hauled it home simply because it was quicker but have had it on the road a couple of times since getting it home. It has a 361 that runs good and the truck has power steering and good tires so handles well on the road. Should it turn out I need any parts I will let you know. Thanks again.

Do you have the steering connecting rod? Connects the wheel with the steering piston.

Ford calls it the spindle connecting rod. Is it in good shape? Mine is all worn out. How much?

Don't know, i'll have to look at in to see what it is
Are you talking about the rod that goes from the steering sector to the steering cylinder?

Googled spindle connecting rod and it showed a tie rod end.

Its the rod that goes from the wheel itself to the cylinder.
